Speedway action ~ bot enougb to make uP for the cbilly weather as a new track record was set by Sonny Nutter, who beat the times set by World Champion Ivan Mauger. The Second semi turned into a nocontest for the win as Nutter used tb1s race to set bis new track record, but while Sonny was running away, there was a terrific battle going on back in secood place. Off the starting line Sonny bad grabbed the lead with Norm Elledge secood, but Paul Conserrierre was right beb10d bim, and rigbt away the crowd could see that bere was going to be a battle as Norm and Paul were going into the corners side by side and looking good. Norm left Paul an opening and be took advantage of It to pull secood spot all the way to the cbeckered flag. The trophy dasb was something to see! Rick Woods was really trying bard after learning that Sonoy had seta new record. As they went Ioto the first corner, It was Rick taking the lead. Sonoy got ott the l10e last, but then he poured the coals to it and moved up to second beb10d Woods, but no matter how bard he tried, he couldn't pass Rick. As they went into the last lap, Greg Haserot, in third spot, fell in the first comer, then as Rick and Sonoy flew for the ftnisb line, Nutter made ooe last bld to take Rick 00 the inside and did a power wheelie while in a full-lock slide and lost It out from under bim right in the straightaway. U he bad tumbled for 10 more feet, he would have had a secood place. The B main was about as even a match as you could come uP with as they all went into the first corner in one big pack and came out the same way with Ron Miller in the lead as his handicap start was only 10 yards wb1le the rest were on the 20 yard line. For two 1aps they were like the four points of a diamond with Roo at the lead point, right beb10d and tapping 00 bis shoulder was Jobo Carter '-'-OWASAI'-- -- --HONDA SPECIALTIES-lilt Head work Cu lorn porting & poUshing Cu tom cams Headquarters BEACH anES CYCLES 525 N. £1 C.III.. ~.I S. The long way around was a disadvantage for Sam and by the time be dropPed back into the groove, be bad to settle for a second spot behind Carter. The A main again turned Into a NutterWoods battle, but that Is what the crowd was hoping for as they know that when tbese two riders do battle, It makes for some of the most exciting speedway racIng that ever seen. They fought side by side for three solid 1aps in some of the most fantastic displays of cootrolled slides that the Whiteman oval has featured yet. Right behind, although not able to move uP, was Greg Haserot with stu Morley in fourth. After three suspeosetul1aps, Nutter took advantage al a little hobble made by Rick in the corner and pulled ahead. Rick couldn't find the way back into the battle.
