'/////////////// Scrambling At Uvas Dam ~L////////////// .. SAN.JOSE, CALIF. May 30.1969- While Mario ADdrett1 was tearing up the indY 500, the local motorcycle enthusiasts from the San Francisco bay area showed lIP at Uvas Dam to do their own track scorching. The day was rather hot and tiring for both riders and spectators under the blazing sun but most everyone managed to enjoy the day's events. The East Side M.C. is to be congratulated on their track preparation, their organiZed proceedings throughout the day, and for so graciously giving away those large and expensive trophies. However, we do hope that in the future the club's starter will be a little quicker in throwing the tlag and go a little easier on our clutches. Riders Tim Ronsse and Ron Leidig, both F&M reed valve Hodaka mounted. added to their growing string of points by picking up first and second resPectively in the 100cc novice main event. John Fergundes on a Bultaco Pur8ang ventured forth from his home near Halt Moon Bay to grab the 250 novice main in fine style. Fergundes bad taken a close second in his heat but he wa.!!. not to be beaten in the main. Heubert Wells (Bul.) followed in second with Jan Westrop (Yam.) in third. 250 expert Allen Kenyon jumped into a big lead at the start of his main and he went on to win, never seriously challenged by the other riders. Kenyon (Bul.) reversed the order of his heat race flnlsh in the main, with Jim Foley placing second and Scott Dittenbaugh in third. The last event of the day was the hotly contested 40 inch main. The event got off to a bad start when big Bud Kneass and another rider tangled on the downhill part of the course. neither rider being seriously hurt. There were some harsh words between various club members and riders, some hasty repairs to the damaged motors, and an eventual restart. The remaining six laps were run and halt way through the event expert Bob Scally took over the lead atter a fierce battle with the early leaders. Then all eyes focused on hard charging Rick Otto who bad battled up from flIth position to second behind Scally. otto finally closed the gap and he pre~ej1 bard for the win. Scally was able to state oft the passing attempts just long enough to win the ennt a mere halt- bilte lenctb ahead of Don Henning h.d ~ f~sl ride bul jusl f~lIed to bruk lIle timing siring. By J, Lacey CORBETT, ORE" May 25. 1969 - Wblle the weather overhead repeatedly changed its mind some fifteen hundred spectstors and competitors journeyed to Corbett, Oregon, May 25 for the Spring Opening Tire Climb. Promoted by the East Side Motorcycle Company (H-D) of Portland, and sponsored by the Ridge Runners M.e., this 45th Annual hill-climb event was in every way a success. Rain the day before bad helped pack the treacherous 150 foot hill but it was still loose at the top and only momentum would carry one over. But that didn't bother Russell Bjornstad as the flftysix year old rider ripped over the hill so hard on his 250 Bultaco that he completely cleared the second timing wire on the top, falling to stop the clock. He was made to re-run. As the classes progressed the winning times became faster. John Ross won the 360 division with an 8.10 sec. run; Triumph mounted Del George turned in a 7.20 sec. blast to cop the 500 class, and ex-national champion Richard Clay (H-D) was quickest of the day with a 6.15 sec. dash to take top honors in the Open. Harley dealer Floyd Payne bested many of the younger Open class competitors with ten second trip that netted him fourth in his class and young Tom Granberg, son of the Ridge Runners' president. Dave. was fifth in the 100cc. What a day! Lots of spills and IlPendings. excitement aplenty. Watch for the next Ridge RlIIIIlers tire or chain climb. You won't want to miss it.
