'The race orig1na.lly scheduled for Memorial Day was posWoned until Sunday after torrential rains turned the clay surface to gumbo mud. Sunday's event Husqvarna &Penton while Sandy Saunders trailed. 'The Championship Main was marred by a mis-start prompting starter Bob Malley to place four of the front line starters to the rear leaving Mark Williams and Van Leeuwen alone at the front and Sonny Burres, Jim Jones, Dave Clarke and Sandy Saunders in the third row. Young Willlarns broke to the lead on the ..start, followed bY Van Leeuwen and first year expert Gregg Morris. Skip took the lead briefly in lap six, but Willlams snatched it back~ It looked like it was going to be a repeat of last year's handlebar to handlebar duel when suddenly Williarns locked-uP and went down in the middle of turn two. 'The rest of the field slid by the fallen leader. Coming through the pack, Jim Jones quickly claimed second spot and was challenging Van Leeuwen for the last eighteen laps. Steady riding Emil Ahola relinquished third place to charging Don Mc Leod for a few laps late in the marathon until McLeod uPset in the north corner. Ahola and Jimmie Smith skidded by on the inside while Burres went over the bank to avoid crashing McLeod. The only casualty of the day came when San Franciscan Paul Bostrum slid down In a practice laP, pinning his foot beneath his mount. His boot was pierced and hisfoot was cut• 'The amateur event was dominated by Tacoman Squire Tomasie; fast qualifier, dash winner, heat winner and a wire to wire main event win. 'The biggest challenge came from Bill Elder. His dash attempt was thwarted by a spectacular end-aver-end spill In the right-hander. Riding perhaps a little more cautiously Elder took second In the main leading last week's winner Bill Noble. Any real duel in the novice event failed to materialize as Darrel Cotton jumped the front while dash winner Chuck Joyner scattered the field with a second turn slldeout. Graham regular, Pat Marlnacci was never able to get close to the fiying cotton kid.
