n~ ! q RRtI u C ~ By Maureen Lee PERRIS, CALIF. June 6- O.C.M.C., as it's always called, one of the oldest clubs in District 37, threw a slap-on scrambles Sunday. The turnout wasn't impressive (it's been a long time since we saw a 250Cc Novice moto). OnlY four girls showed for what seems to be a dwindling Powder Puff class, and one of them was prompUy out of it wben she went into turn one way over her head and dropped it, so the remaining three happily went at it with Diane Connolly Winning, Eulene Long second Hodakamounted. Riders were warned of jumping the starters, and good starters they were. But thls information didn't sink into John Rice's noggin and he jumped twice on one start. As he was circling around again, the starter dropped the flag and it was UP to John to make time, which he proceeded to do on his potent litue Sachs, followed in by Larry Bird and Dick Sanders, both Novices wbo gave Rice more challenge than he expected trom green plate riders! The 250 Expert class was a sha.keup. Larry Taylor (Bultaco) won the flrst moto in great shape. Second moto it was Steve Nichols zooming UP on his Yamaha to catch earlier leader Danny Carleton (Ossa). Come the third round it was another Hockie-sponsored Ossa grabbing off the lead ridden by Danny Hockie and once again Nichols had to do it the hard way, but do it he did, coming back to the pits grinning from ear to ear. Fred Corley and Tom LaFortune, both on TriumPhs, were the two to watch in the Open Amateur go. Each won one moto so stood an even chance for the win, but La Fortune cra.sbed in the last one and ruined his chances. The Wheat ta.mily again won their respective classes. Chuck Wheat (Malco) renewed his weekly battie with Glen Brunson (Bultaco) in the 500 Amateur division. These two really have at it every week with good, clean hard riding. C.H. Wheat (Matco) won the E:xpertbut not without ooe heck of a tussle with Jim Connolly 00 a Grooves. Said C.H. afterwards, "( didn't know Greeves went that fast." Gary Jones on a BSA was rigbt in there several times, along with his dad Don. Mike Posey really took a lead in the Open class final but was forced to retire with engine problems, leaving Terry Moriarty and Ike Mizen to setue it for the win. Bill Byrd on a Beezer came in tor the third. Jim Goldsmith on his new Triumph was a DNF after getting an over-exuberant couple of turns. There was an instant playback video tape recorder on hand, enabling riders to see themselves in action immediately after they had ridden. The track surface held up well, but two riders suffered broken bones. Grumbles about thll quality of the ambulance service will be checked into by the District Sports Committee. Perris Valley will be their own hosts next week for a "rough" scrambles although their calendar date lists a TT scrambles. It will be interesting to see what support the riders will give this after they got a look at the track Sunday! There's a section that is nothing short of wheeeoo!
