The race was set uP as two 45-mile
loops in a figure eight. The pits were in
the canyon floor, four miles from the
start.
The riders would come through the
pits and UP the steeP canyon wall and out
in the open boondOCks, a real spectators
treat. First rider to reach the CllYon
after the start was Ameture Ron WlJsoo
#516X on a Husky, Bergquist was second
and Patrick was running fifth.
They made the first loop in about one
hour, with Bergquist and Patrick both
getting a quick gas check and going out
wheel-to-wheel in spectacular half-mile
broad slides. Ron Wilson was running real
close to them.
The first loop was a real pistol with a
three hundred foot long downhill, so long
in fact, that you couldn't see a rider at
the bottom when you sat at the top.
The second loop was super fast, with a
COuPle of slippery, graded fire roads.
Just Bergquist's meat.
At the finish line after a fast second
loop and one "endo" and the lead changiug twice, it was Bergqulst in for the
~ on a Sachs. Robert Moll 192
took first
0 500 Amateur on a Husky.
