After two of three motos, the point spread was so close that any of the three leaders were possible victors. The t1nal heat saw a renewal of the wheel-to-wheel hattle betweenRolot! and Clarke with number 2 plate holder J1m Dunn in close pursuit. On the f1nal lap, Hodaka-mounted Clarke overextended himself in trying to pass Roloff (Yamaha) on the outside and almost lost it, allowing little Earl to go ahead for the win. Dunn's Bridgestone captured a close third. Sal Peluso, a most promising District 38 100Cc Novice rider, rode his Yamaha to victory· followed by Hodaka pilot Ray Frank. Rich Ribley displayed greatly improved riding by capturing third on the only four-stroke to show any speed, a Garelli. Clarke In Co mand The closely contested 250Cc fracas was dominated by Kawasaki-mounted Wayne Clarke, who entered every eve nt on the program, w1nn1ng five out of the six and finishing s econd in one even t. An outstanding performance for a lad on his first day as an E:xpert. Kawasaki pilot Vlc Hannan and Bultaco-mounted Gary Gilmore battled it out for second with Hannon showing a s light advantage. Gilmore, however, has not yet been advan ced to Expert status. TIm Leque led all three 500Cc motes from t1ag to flag but won the ·2nd mota by a photo nntsh over his buddy, Gary Gilmore. Wayne Clarke i s third with 45 and Ward Ring fourth with 35. There were some protests because the leaders had points from more than one class in their total so it was decided, in fairness to all, that only the points of a rider's best class would count in the overall championsh1p which includes an alle:xpense tour to a Meldcan Resort City by air. A quick recount showed Rolot! and Sprague still tied wiltl 30 points each. The neld TT program at Tijuana w1ll be on Oct. 20.
