Schultz cops class A Troian win By Mike Capallte SOUTH GATE, Cals, Aug. 25 - Elliott Schultz proved that you can be the hard luck man of the evening and still be the hero of the night, as he proceeded 10have more than his share of problems, but stayed with It 10 garner enough points 10 move Into the Tr ojan Raceway " A" Main, The Class A speedway program seeme d 10 be filled with spills: 10 start with , Jim Nicho lson was leading hi s fir st heat, lost his adhesion and went down. Then In the fourth hea t, one of the more spectcular spills too k place as Jim Doron los t It trying to go under Al Holley and bo th of them wen t down In a tan gle of men an d ma chi nes . Al was so tangled in his ma chin e that the y had to r emove the fr ont whe el 10 extract his le g, but both r ide r s were okay except that Al had s kin ned his hand up s ince he had C iled 10 wear his a gl oves . Schultz had his Cirs t heartbr eaker In th e fourteenth heat when he was lea ding ove r Steve Bast and John Ca r te r • With a l ap an d a half to go, his machine started mls-Ciring , an d al though Elliott held ba ck th eir bi ds till the last corner , when they ca me down the line for the checkered flag, both Bast an d Carte r pass ed hi m and Schultz had to settle for third. The next hea t bro ught the cr owd 10 its feet as Ji m Nicholson an d Eddi e Mulder ha d 'a t it for four laps as cl ose as you could ever make It with both r iders put ti ng on a bea utiful displayof full-lock sliding with Nichols on finally taking the win. Nicholson Crashes, Then Wins Aft er the twenty hea t races, Wlliner s of the fo ur fastes t hea ts came outfor the Trophy Dash which lined up Nicholson, Conser r l ere, Mulder and DeWayne Keeter. The flag droppe d, Mulder s hot in lo the lead an d as the r iders s tarte d inlo the second lap, Nichols on dove low on the The C Mal n was dom inated by a boy up from Oklahoma , J im Posey, who was taking his fi rst ride on a speedway bike and showed he might be a man 10 reckon with as he was able to stay ahead of second place man Rick Woods and third place and fourth place men Chuck J ones and John Carter. Sunday's Main Events were just the way Main Events s hould be, as each one provided a li t tle mo r e excitement and thrills than the last one . When the B Main pulled 10 the li ne, it was evid ent that there woul d be a battle as Ste ve Scott , DeWayne Keeter, Ste ve Bast and Jim Nicholso n consti tute d the line up. It be ca me a Nichols on- Scott duel right a way a nd J i m was able to hold hi s machin e a little lower in the corners 10 pull a way from Steve for the win, but in the me an time, they put on a fan tasti c display of r ldin ' an d slldin ' a s only Sco tt an d Nichols on coul d do. Schultz Comes Through The A MaIn lIne- UP was both impress ive and formidab le, pitting Eddi e Mulder, Sonny Nutt er, EliiottSchultz and Pa ul Conser r le re, with the crowd somewhat l ea ning toward Elliott a s his luck was jumping ba ck an d forth be tween good and bad. After his engine failure in the 14th heat, he had come ha ck In the 18th heat to take the lead again an d with one lap to go, the mac hine started to misfire, but he was able by s hee r will power 10 retain his lea d till he cross ed the li ne for the checkered flag and was che ered by the s pectators . For thi s reason Elliott ha d the fans on his side an d a s he was pushing Mulder for the lead with Nutter and Conser rlere r ight behind him, the cr owd was on its feet and cheering.
