SAMMY MILLER TRIALS AND SCHOOL Story and Photos by Tom Culp Cl> .Q s IR VINE, Cal ., Aug. 24 & 25 - The trials mast er Sammy Miller concluded a very 'successf ul tour of the U.S. here the past weekend with Cycle ~ World Magazine and the Southern r.:l California Trials Association hosting Z him at Sa9dleback Park. ~ & r.:l ..::I C,) ~ C,) The activities opened Saturday with a brief talk by Sammy Miller on the fine points of trials r iding. Questions wer e asked by those attending the school. The class was li mited to 50 riders for better ins truction and the So. Cal. Trials Assoc. members made up most of this with a number of San Francisco trials riders attending. M iller Shows ' Em Ho w We then moved to the real s chool area with Sammy setting up traps and making it look just too easy, after negotiating a trap three or four times, for the beneflt of his pupils and a large crowd of spectators. Sammy would then watch the member s of the school as they came thr ough the trap, pointing out where to put the front wheel in the more diffic ult areas and s howing wher e mistakes were made. In one section, a gully gro wn high with weeds and brush, the master looked it over, then starting at one end, crossed from side to side, rode along .the si de then down to the center putting the front wheel from bank to bank then out over a rock ledge - all this time in a ar ea 50 feet long and 20 feet wide at the top and 2 feet wide in the bottom . . Sunday Big Day Sunday saw 121 riders descend on various traps with Miller riding for exhibition only and losing 15 points, to cheer s of over 2,000 spectator s. The clos es t competition came fro m Jim Wilson and Bob Gr ove, So. Cal 's #1 and #2 . r iders r es pectively, with Vic Boocock rounding out the Masters Class . Vic, originally from England, is the top r ider in the San Francisco area.
