HI BOOTS TT AT DEHESA Story and Photos by Bill Harmer cu., Aug. 11 -The Hi Boots M.C. hosted its monthly TT races at the Dehesa track beneath blue sk ies and a warm August sun. In spite of the fac t that someone neglected to lay the customary lime mak1ngs andfalled to post the dir ec tional sign at the access road lea ding off the main r oad, a goodly number of riders and spectators managed to find the course in time for the first race which was de layed when John Hoy, durIng practice for the Open Expert races, was seriously Injur ed and ' was taken to the hospi tal. The races could not be started unW the ambulance returned which was about an hour . The big Inter es t was In the Open Expert division as all the leading point conte nders were in evidence. Shortly befor e race ti me Al Finan's Triumphdeveloped SAN DIEGO, the lead at one time or another. Hosaka, whose specialty is a controlled slide found the rock-strewn sweeper very hazardous to his style and had to r ide more conservatively than usual, but sWl managed to collect the gr ea tes t number of points for the win. Ray Vanderpool slam-banged his Yamaha DT-lintosecond and Ward Ring brought his hot Husky in tblrd. In the lOOcc Novice Main, Hodaka mounted Wayne Clark upset Yamaha jockey and pre-race favorite , Earl Roloff, J r. D. Stauffer prodded his Bridges tone across for tblrd position . WIth the local hotshoes all pointing for the 100cc Gran Prix next month, the l OOcc Expert Bash promised to be areal barn- burner. Dan Banker, fr esh from an Inte r national victory at Ti juana, looked impr es s ive on his F&M Enterprises r eed-induction Hodaka, but his engine sucked the hel1core Into the combus tion whose pretty wife, Judy, cheered him on while keeping point scores. Yamaha pilot John Harret sneaked in ahead 01 T.F . Baulter (TrIumph) to win second. The Open Novice Class was exciting to watch because of the r iding of Richard Ribley, who has shown great impr ovement in r iding Mike Garrett's Norton; He seems to have absolutely no fear, and with a little more practice should make hi mself known. He looked very impr es s ive while taking third behind Bob Larson and Wayne Butterfield, both on Triumphs. ... As usual, Carol Chiara and Debbie "> Reon put on a close duel for Powder Puff honors with Carol coming out in front. '>0 Carol Gooding looked llke she was out ~ for an afternoon pleasure r ide as she captured tblrd. All three girls were on ~ ~ Hodakas. It was a very enjoyable afternoon for .... everyone and, as usual, the Hi Boots put c::; on a good pr ogram. Hostilities will be :: r esumed at South Bay Speedway (Mesa) August 25. A I was even" ual winner, #12 Dick Moore (Triumph) took 2nd, Don lo t 3rd. motor troubie and he took over his teamchamber on the first lap and he had to mate, Jim Harmon's, snortin' Norton . Jim had reinjured his knee in practice and withdrawn, leaving the bike availab le . Myron "Red Baron" Carte r had his Triumph r unning nicely and looked confident as usual. Over-Anxious Open Experts Don Fi nan reported mat ms Triumph was in top s hape, and W ayne Hosaka on Mike Garrett's BSA Gold Star looked like the man to beat. With the fall of the tl1Ig for the first Moto, the thunderIng horde scrambled down the straight and into the first sweeper with Carter holding a slight lead, closely followed by Hosaka. Halfway through the turn Carter dropped his scooter and Hosaka crashed into him, spllling both r iders. Carter quickly adjusted his damage for the restart, but Hosaka's bent forks were more serious. He got back into the race, but the machine was&tflcult to control and he had toretire after he unloaded in front of the whole pack on the restart. 'r etire. Mickey Chiara, r iding another F&M Hodaka, had placed second In his last two s tarts, and with the steady tm provement that he has been sh owing lately looked li ke a contender . Other Expert r ider s , too numerous to mention, were on hand to keep anyone from getting an easy trophy. Old Maste r, J im McGuire, now almost completely r ecovered from his burns, was happily enco uragIng his F&M Enterprises Team, but pr omised to be bac k in the saddie in time for the Gran Prix. The oldest rider entered was Budd Willis, who although near the balfcentury mark, was No.7 in point standings last year. Motos And More Motos The motos were exciting as the ,little ,r ing- dings changed leads several times. Mickey Chiara did the hat trick and posted his first win of the season. C. Al F inan and his br other, Don, put on a very ' unfr iendly, brotherly duel with Myron Carte r and Dick Moore getting int o the action, but when the points wer e tallied, Nor ton- mounted Al Finan was found to be the winner v.1th Triumph pilot Dick Moore second and Don Finan, also Triumph, claimIng third. As usual, the 250cc Exper t class drew the biggest entry list, and It looked like a r ematch be tween Hus ky- mounted Ward Ring and Yamaha ace, Ray Vanderpool . Wayne Hoska, whose Bultaco PurSang has been waiting for parts , entered on a Kawasak1 and as skillful a r ide r as Wayne is , was to be r ec koned with. All three motos were in constant doubt with Vander pool, Hosaka and Ring all holding by r iding his littl e Bultaco to thir d. Larr y Colli e, who always puts , on a good show on his Kawasaki, dominated the 200cc Event to take first honor s, but hard- r iding Eric Crippa on a Yamaha gave him a good conte stto captur e second pos itio n. Cr owd- pleasIng Bultaco pilot Ed Murl e sho wed real r iding ablllty while placing thi rd.
