FAST AND FI ERe E AT LOOI . Simy and Photo s ~. E dwa rd Johnson Cloudy skies bung over LOO1' s Cycle Bowl on May 19, but the rains never ' came so a good, dry race was enjoyed by all. Standing water was warked out of the track and into one of the fastest bard dirt raceways 'L OO1's seen this year . After a little packing down by Stockton Scramblers M,C. members, the races with the 100cc's running first. Most impressive rider in that si ze was Kenny Roberts of , Modesto, who sbowed all the other riders in the Amateur class bow to pusb all ther e was out of a Suzuki. The nex t class, 200cc Novice, showed the track in a little diller ent Iight, In the Main Event Dick Harvey of Watsonville on a Bultaco, Craig Fillmer of San Jose on a Honda and another rider carried each other ot! the track coming out of the first straigbtaway, winding upon the side of the far dirt wall. Arter untangling each other they all rode back to try It again. After the third start Harvey and Fillmer found themselves taking second and third behind Bultaco-mounted Bob Butler of Concord. Pittsburg's George Machado of Pittsburg led the 200cc Amateur for the first few laps, but ended up second when his Bultaco was Jumped by another Bul ridden by Leonard Garcia, of Hollister, wbo took fir st . Paul Johnson, riding Suzuki I n the 250cc Exp ert class, sbowed bow be's been moving up I n class by beating all his competition trom the line. Second spot, taken on last turn, went to Jim F ol ey of Lafayette ( Bulta co) . Joe Turres led the 350cc Novice fast a while on his Honda, til he fell victim to another fast moving Honda ridden by John · Jim Nichol s ( Bul) coml ne ove r Jump. Anderson. A Malco, ridden by bardworking Elmer Wiley, just couldn't push I ts way past third. Battle l or IIrst and second In Novic e hea t. BSA - All The Way The 441cc Victors were out In swarms In the 500cc class, with BSA taking all places in the Novice class. Outstanding rider In the class was A l Saldivar of San Jose, who mad e a point of taking the lead from the start. In the 650cc Novice class there was another noticeable BSA rider winning his class. Bob Robertson Jumped on the second and third place Triumphs to give him a fi r st place trophy to take home to Pacifica. Paul Johnson grabbed another fir s t , this time on his Bultaco, to show where the two-strokers can stand In the 650Cc Amateur-Expert class. U there were any questions lett In the minds of the spectators about two -strokes, they wer e quickly answered by Bob Grossi , who took secon d on a Montesa.
