As was 5tated In your ACCEPTABLE LE&lSUnOI Now that the furor over tbe • bellaw has subsided some. the tbougbt occurs to me that UlIQuestionably some enterprising legislator will whip up a new and perbapsmore acceptable bill. To whom the bill is more acceptable hecomes an important point for the motorcyclist to consider. We can he sold down the river for very few dollars. and if we are. it will be hecause of our own indifference. Tbe first defense to whatever bill is devised is generally sarcasm. and while it isn't completely without merit, suggestions that all legislators are idiotic or that tbe drivers of all vehicles including borse drawn carts he required to abide by tbe saine laws with wbicb motorcyclists must comply. Tbe real trutb is that motorcyclists should now be working with legislators to de ve lop a good bill. A bill whicb has logic and is based on tbe needs of the motorcyclist. A bill wbicb is acceptable to motorcyclists. We must do tbis or be saddled with some kind of law tbat is not acceptable, for the simple fact is. that we eventually WILL HAVE some kind oJ gpeclal laws concerning us. It is odd that with such a large number oJ cyclists there are so few tbat will take time to put into writing their views on any subject. I wonder if through Cycle ews and with your influence, you could solicit suggestions and act as tbe vox pop at tbe cyclist, forwarding sensible suggestions to Ie gislators known to be friendly to cyclists? Modem motorcycles are manufactured to perform like a prosthetic extension of the rider's mind. SOoner or later, bowever your mind may become clouded by an overdose of speed and you may find yourself on a bad trip. heading for a fall. It is important at such a time to keep from thinking· bere's where I get burt,· or other negative ideas. Most crasbes are caused by negative thinking on the part of the rider. Don't think cras h. Pretend instead that you are your favorite racing Expert and that you. by Aggie. will bring this motor under control or your IIlme isn·L . (fill in tbe name of your fa verite racing bero). Then if you must crash. at least tIy to tuck and roll (think of a someJsault) and pull your leiS and arIDS in to reduce injury. Aren't you glad you are (or don't you wisb that you were) wearing that nice. heavy jacket, belmet, boots and gloves? Don't stare at the ground approaching. Shut your eyes and duck your head Like you were being born again. You can now safelY believe that you are out of control. Nothing to do but wait until you come to a stop and hope it doesn't happen too abruptly. Now you open your eyes. A crowd bas gatbered around you, expecting the worst. You can start to cry now. baby. You eet another chance aDd now you have to face responsibili~. You broke the physical laws, arrested yourself and delivered your miserable balk to the mercy of the same laws youviolated. They let you off easy, you know that, don't you? Motorcycle racers have made a systematic art out of tugging the physical laws by the beard. A race track is a laboratory for learning bow far buman obstinacy can get in the face at these immutable laws. If you want speed. you'll have to learn the limits. By comparison with the permanent laws of gravity. centrifugal force, cycle dynamics and buman nature the traffic cop is a sympathetic friend, trying. by his lectures, example'and ticket book to band you a reprieve. from that bigher court of no appeal, wbere ignora~e is no defense, eIther. .***************************************. • • • • • • • • • • : : • CHAMPIO SHIPS : : A ROW! • • : CAIJFORNIA STATE CRAIlPlONSIDP RARE II HO~ SIIuuocks mrcycle CI b .y, September 10, 19&'1 : 1st - ~ AND JACK MORGAN WIN ~ • : • • • : : • • : • • : • • • • • DlS'l'RlC'l' 37 CHAMPIONSHIP HARE SCRAMBLES- Aalelope : Valley Raablers MlC Clab • Soday, SeptelDlier 17, 1961 • • • • • • • • • • • • .... _ T......·) COLMA ,FULTOIl VISIT ENGLISH E.W. ·Pete· Colman.
