GanIen& CIII/(._47 Precision engineered _ ACA short tracking is beginning to take a new thrill with the development of the quarter mile track at Orange County. There are °no lights installed as yet, so only the heat races are being run on the quarter mile track while it is still daylight. The new track is not a perfect' oval but more egg shaped so that one end actually has two corners and really presents a challenge to the rider. Ron Jones, owner and promoter, hopes to have lights installed within the next week. The course should be ideal for the JAP's. Rick Woods, Ducati-mounted, continues to dominate the 250cc class, but a real contende r for his front running spot is sal Acosta from Compton on a Bultaco.Sal has really been able to perform on the new quarter mile course and should present quite a challenge to Rick in the future. Neil Winston, from San Bernardino, showed uP in the 250cc class with a real interesting machine, a Hagon. This machine is aJAP-type machine, used for grass track racing in Europe, and the way he went around the quarter mile course, standing up and squaring off the corners really had the crowd excited. He didn't do very well in the Main Event because the machine did not handle too well on the short course, but we look to more of this type machine in the future on the bigger course. Last year's l00cc champion, Russ Robinson, won the 100cc Trophy Dash and Main Event as well as capturing the 500cc main event win on his BSA. He rides a Yamaha in the lightweight events. LOS COYOTES SCRAMBLES by Jane Williams Finally, a club found a relatively dust free area in the desert and proceeded to put on a well organized, extremely well marked course in the Holiday Hill (Lancaster) area Sunday• For a new club with only 15 memhers to work, there were Coyotes everywhere. Fast rolling hills took you to the smoke bomb with Ron Fry, Al VanderPol and J.N. Roberts in that order single file. Doc Bryce in the middle of the pack, missed the trail and rode out the rocks passing and looking good. Across the boonies to check #1 and down the stair stepped sand wash to check #2 they came through in this order: Fry, Bergquist and Roberts. Bergquist turned it on and had a good lead at the finish of lap #1. Fry was out with a flat tire. At the end of lap #2 Roberts was in the lead with plenty of room. During the 3rd lap, George Walker of santa Barbara closed the gap to 30 seconds at checl! #2 but fouled a plug and finished 5th after Roberts, Martino, Griffin and Hutton. J.N. Roberts was quoted as saying the course was so well marked he could have ridden it with his eyes shut. Trail bikes had a separate course and found it tight and twisty, laid out by the legendary Wheelie Wheeler. Tom Ruddy (Ram) on a Van Tech Hadaka grabbed the lead and strated loafing. Steve Holliday (Novice) aced him and Ruddy finally caught and passed Steve on the last lap to win, with Rick stump 3rd and Scctt Lapraik 4th. Rosie Martino was the first girl in and declared the course great, to the embarrassment of Earl Roeseler (ex Trail King) who thought it was too rough. Congratulations, Coyotes on a fine TUn, and welcome to District #37. (ae.I&a _ pace 18),
