THE LEGEND OF WHEELIE WHEELER His ears could hear and his eyes cQuld see But his nose was what really knew That standing there ..,as an Alaskan Bear He could tell by the smell of the hair! A tree stood there with its limbs so bare And its branches open wide Like it was' specially planted there Just to welcome him inside. Now Frank's a very friendly guy And he likes lots of people around So the Bear that stood there with aroma so rare Was such a big challenge - he thought it a dare. He jumped on his Bike and he put her in low And he IJliIde that engine roar He started outside. and he waved goodbye But he stopped at the cabin door. He reached in his pocket and pulled out a sticker And he stuck it on that Bear's nose You can imagine the look and his surprise When that Bear grOWled. and suddenly arose. He parked his bike in the middle of the room And laid down to get some sleep. His snoring was loud - but he heard that sound And it chilled him through and through. by Dolores Tindell The cabin stood by a stream so wide You could spit clear across to the other side He tried it, then rode' cross the water and rocks By then he was wet - clear through to his sox. There was a fireplace in the corner It was the only thing inside So he started a fire, soon blazing bright Then settled down, thought he'd spend the night. "WHEELIE & THE BEAR" He heard it again - and opened his eyes Then he ran to the door and peeped with care He stood and stared - there was something there But he couldn't believe the size. He rode up on a porch so old Tbe boards bleached white looked bold From his weight the boards did queak and scold Then the door he did swing wide. CONTIIIUED "Wheelie· was riding one stormy night When an old cabin came into view He'd rode all day and half the night So to him it looked quite new. You could tell by the glare of that Alaskan Bear That Frank ·Wheelie· Wheeler had better beware "That Bear'll clout me right in the mug If my trusty Hodaka now fouls a plug·. ELSINORE NIGHT LIFE NEW fACES LINE THE lENDS by 000 Wall1!o On a very warm Saturday night at Elsinore around 150 scrambles- happy two-wheel slide artists wi th their attendants, six or se ven hundred wi ves. friends, and fans all came out for an exciting night of fun and thrills. Most of the favorite faces at trackside on this night were not there but they were replaced by quite a few new faces. 200 Exp ert To rtoi se and Hare The proverbial tortoise in this case as 1 see it was J. Hart on a Triumph Cub that was just not geared low enough. However, it was low ,enough in the class as Jim rode consistent and sure in all his races, as the front runners such as B. Spier. P. Coberl:y and G. Mance fought it out among themselves, possibly a little too hard as some seemed to be suffering from. slips and slide, new machinery problems etc. It will be interesting next week to see how these guys sort their problems out. 500-350 Elpert Slick the Starters Everyone was out to "slick" the starter and make that all important hole shot. U. Koto. BSA and Clutch Cargo seem to have this down to a science as Koto fought off all co rners to win this class after Cargo's gear shift lever was hit by a front Wheel. putting Clutch on the trailer early in the program. A. Ellis rode good all night for second place on a Horda that really wails. New Stuff and Things Elsinore owner Tom Phaschal is building a shower for the riders in the parking lot and it is all finished but the water works part and he expects to have that done by next week. ,Also Tom plans to keep running Saturday nights indefinitely while it is warm.
