The first rider to arrive her e was about two hour s later than expected. Th is is the point whe re many runs end . but not s o Cor the Hi ~Jinx . This was just the ha lf-way mark. The roads ' traveled aCter leaving lrvine Park were the groovtes t yet. Coun ty Highway #18 in the Santa Ana Mountain s was made Cor motorc ycling. Here the riders found pl enty oC curves including long sweepers and a heaping helping oC ti ght Iett-righrs, In this section oC the run. riders encounter- which was back a t J enkins Sports Cent er . If you are a good road rid er and you miss ed this run, make a li ttl e no te in your bl ack boo k not to miss the ne xt Hi-J'inx run. However. iC you are one oC thos e rider s who can't eve n follow the simplist maps given out at most poker runs , and you get your kicks by protesting the map at the end oC the run . you might as well go to a movie and leave the run for the heads-up riders . You could not reach th e end to put in your protest. For a well·handIed. well ·plan ned run spiked with originality and hard earned trophies, I would like to be the !irs t to s tan d up and give thr ee cheers Cor the Hi- J inx. ENGLISH TRIALS By Ray Warner Th e Engli sh Trial s riders all enjoy ed another very fine day of compettu ve fun ri di ng . Sunday th e 13th. in the Dana P oint area. There could not be any better a ctivity to prepare young chil dren and yo ung tee n-a ge rs for future s erious s ports . for s choo l. and particularly for automobile driving then Trials. It Is out th ere . in the fie ld. with plenty of freed om and room. with a small bik e . that th ey will le ar n mechanical termin ol ogy combi ned wit h an early knowled ge oC a n engi ne ' s response to clutch and throttle . Here too . the y will taste strenuous physical exe rti on with hilarious fun and pl easure in t he out-d oor world . Th er e's als o no Cine r co ndi tioning to build a nd main ta in strong. healthy bodi es . Th er e were quite a few s pectators who rod e in On bi g street bike s Crom very lo ng distances. Th ere was al so an unus ual ly large tum-out of many newcomers competing for the first ti me . Dal e Eckhardt is a newcomer on t he s cene, with a huge 500 c c Ma tchle s s. He 's doing real well too . Many of the novices ar e women an d children . howev er . who seem to have th e time of thei r liv es on dinky little ultra-lightweight machines. And too. i t· s al ways a pleasure to watch so many peopl e hav e s o much fun on so many differen t kinds of hi kes. 1I0re locks t han links. . .: ed dead-end roads and s e cret check s. Th ey also found themselve s riding over the same road s se ve ral times in different di rec tions and pa ssing riders coming from the oppo s ite dir ection. Only :>0%of the entries co mpleted the run. Since this was the case, you might co nside r this an en duro-poker run. Call it what you like; for my money, it was a good run. No s pe cial equi pment is nee de d a nd no special cl othing is requi red for c ompetition. Any kind of a bik e will suffice.
