87 8i11 Petticrew Jack Ross hosted another of his popular Picnic Hare Scrambles 15 miles East of Lancaster. California on Ponderosa Ranch property. These events. although non-sanctioned, seem to have a promising future. The latest hosted a substalJtial number of riders and picnickers as compared to last year, when there were more rabbits on the course than riders.' The Ponderosa course includes a wide variety of terrain in its 16mile loop. SOft sand sections, steep hills and bard sand were encountered. Many a rider and machine retired early under some scattered Yuccas along the course to cuss and discuss how tough the race was. Trail Bites MORGAN.o Who Else? 0 Hodaka riders seemed to find the course to their liking as they landed the first six places in the Trail-Bike class. Jack Morgan led bis competition around the course to take anotber win away from fellow desert enthusiasts. Ray Sborb and Carl stevens couldn't manage the pace of Jack Morgan but still copped hard ridden second and third places. Riders in the Trail-Bike class found themselves with a good chance of getting a trophy for their efforts. A total of 13 awards were given in the small class alone. With a total of 22 entries in the class this leaves a rider with fairly good odds of taking home some -Braggin' Brass. As this event was divided into Trail-Bikes and Big Bikes, there is no separate victor in 150. 350, 500, and so on. The first bike to cross the finish line after the two required loops is the winner of tbe Big-Bike class. Rod Pack rode a borrowed Triumph to victory in tbe Big-Bike class. Rod got a good start and increased his lead all the way to the smoke bomb, which incidentally, be rode directly through, due to being slightly out of control. Rod was followed by second place man Lon Peterson, although the only time Lon actually caught Rod was at tbe bottom of the steep bill section on the second loop. Rod then managed to pull away to gain another good lead and cop top honors. One particular Desert Rider who just doesn't seem to get his share of glory in Cycle News is Mr. Ben Bok. sec_d plac. filii • • L.at. Pet. . _ fII•• I. pursuit of lbe e1usl. . . . . .,. Many riders mentioned it was the roughest 30 miles they had ridden but were soothed by their glittering awardS. Although there was some Question as to whether some riders had followed the course, this was cleared UP to most everyone's satisfaction. Thanks go to Jack Ross and his cohorts for providing a day of mODeY' s-worth riding and an overall good desert meet. The ne xt scheduled race at Ponderosa is on LaborDay week-end.
