The first such event was on June 18 and there will be another one on August 20 and again on Sept. 19. For both riding and watching they are first class. This time around, over twelve hundred fans watched 134 racers do battle in eighty degree. shirt-sleeve weather. These events have to draw against the sprint car races in Bakersfield and more than holding their own against the four wheeled competition. They really put on a good show. Action on the eight turn, banked track was fast and furious from 7:30 until midnight. The banking on the turns is piled between the track and the wooden crash wall and many of the hot-shoes plant their wheels in that soft earth and dial it on in a spectacular thrillshow style. Two men deserve special mention as the standouts of the night. Local hero Mike Lane stormed his Hodaka to a popular win in the 90cc Amateur/Expert go. This Expert class rider is nine years old! Tre other real goer was the Open Amateur winner Ron (King of Whiteman) Pierce. Ron's special feat was not just winning his event here, but trare ling a hundred miles to take two seconds and a first in road racing the [allOWing day. The track lighting was much better than last month and the club is putting up more lights every race. A new track always has a few problems and the only time to really complain is when nothing is done about them. The Bakersfield Sprockets M.C. has the track and the riders to put on a real good show.
