And so our families' really close relationship began! When ..e bad unpacked the saddlebap and gear from our ' c;yc le s (the first of so IIIlUIJ' many times). we stared with horror at our overflowing room. How 1rOuld we ever get it all back! But we did time after time . to tbe amazement of other Americans touring Mexico in cars with nmpteen suitcases. o s.. ...., - ••rc l l ' , '. ~ :~ Under way at 8 :30 we arrived at the border. Calexi~exicali.at 9:30. Spent a lot of time there between having our t ourist cards cbecked and obtaining insurance. but at 11 :30 we were rmally on our way. Fina1l.Y. we were on Me xic o 2 - the rout e that parallels the U.S. border east as far as Sonoyta. where it dips south and then east to join Mexico 15 at Santa Ana. Mexico - the Western route to Mexico City. our destination ! It was SUnday , a lot of traffic. families go out for Sunday ri des there. as here. and the road was very had. St opping at San Luis. 46 miles later. for lunch. was a rather hilarious a ffa ir. We knew only a few words of Spanis h and the waitress knew DO English a t all. The bikes had collected a crowd of curious people. This was to be tbe case wherever we stoPped. We saw a great many small motorc;ycles in Mexico, but ve ry very few as large as ours. E dwina and 1 received a great deal of curiosity. too. In the larger cities in Mexico we saw a few women wearing skirts and ,ridi ng side-saddle. People would watch in amazement as we put on our helmets - we saw no ODe wearing helmets except policemen in the larger cities. Ours were all white. Fram San Luis. we rode 125 miles to Sonoyta where we s pe nt our first night in Mexico. We bad to backtrack here for a few miles up toward Arizona to obtain our vehicle permit. The motel was very modern. very clean. and had purified water! There was one common fault we found with just about every motel roomthe plumbing in the toilets was faolty (Wlderstatement!). The venerable Ha rley-Davidson firm of Milwaukee. Wisconsin. entered an equal-share joint venture with the Aeronattica Macchi company of Varese. Italy. A special plant was established at the Italian location for the serial producti on of two principal types of vehicle. • Under specifications advanced by Harle:rDavidson. a SOcc and 2SOcc model were designed in Italy. The two basic power groUps have since been prod uced in seven different model variations. Aimed principally at the American market for c;ycles. the Aermacchi-Harley Davidson line i s nevertbeless finding • good commercial reception in other world markets as well.
