EMCEES PERRIS By Bill P etti gre w Perris M.C. hosted last Sunday's TT scrambles to a late s ta rt due to a new rul e by the Sports Committee. This rul e states that 250s shall prac tice alone with the same be in g true for the lighter bike s. Th e track had been wat er ed all da y Saturday and Sunday morntng , This helped greatly In getting a good tra cktable surface. Action roar ed off the starting li ne with Alfr ed Guzman takin g a fast lead. This was the way Alfred e nde d it .too, with another victory under his ~y Transplanted New Yorker Ron Fors ha wound up third 250 novice. Lot s of youngsters swelled the field. Photos b~· Dan Reynolds Th en came one of the s urprises of the day a s Rollie Clarke team ed up with his 125cc Bultaco to not only ta ke the clas s but beat the 175cc Bulta cos. Paul s eemed to hav e a li ttl e troub le on th e south turn but didn't let thin gs get out of hand, and took the laure ls for his clas s . . • Three Crash Th e 250 Novi c e class saw Gar y Geyer take an early lead on hi s BuIta co and inc rease that lead to a very comforta ble win ah ea d of W ll is Smith i illis als o kept a good on a Gre e ves. W margin of ground betwee n him and Ron F orsha whos e mount wa s a bea utiful H-D Sprin t. Ther e were three ea rly dismounts in the race but no one was hurt, exce pt for aIittle prid e, maybe. AS might be expected. Mal colm Smith o n his Husky proceed ed to annthilate hi s 250c c Amateur /Expert follower s. Bill Cody was the only real cha lle nge to Smith's victory. Honda men Terry White and Ray Nichols, both on 305 ' s fought their way to the 350cc che cker ea hag. They fin ished one-tw o and le ft aif third place to ha rd riding Louis W on a BSA 350. All thr ee did so me real fine riding. atchle ss bot h chal ked BobWard and M up victories as they team ed up a nd won the 500 novi ce eve nt. Bob had to make his own groove but that didn' t hi nde r his s ty le in the least. T he tra ck had j us t been graded an d wa tered down s o it was a li ttle s li ppery on the so ut b turn . At this poi nt a few boys went a little to o wide and ended up five feet l ower than the tra ck, but found their way out a nd a ll was well. Bob was follow ed by John Smitb's Matchless for second and thir d place wen t to Ron Stin ne t on a hot BSA Victor. • 250-miles on Speedo Then came the real big surprise of the day as Don Oglhie on a BS.-\ Vi cto r that he had purchas ed a few days befo re the meet, clinched a very well -ridden "in in the 500 Amateur. To top of[ the win, an d this is the real cappe r, Don had ridde n the bike to the meet, taken off the headlight , and proc eeded to go out and stomp on fello w co mpetitors. All this with only ~o mil e s on the speedo! Just wai t ti ll he gets the thumpe r broken in, tben what? Richard Kouns on another BSA Victor fought his way to second. Open Novi ce a cti on s aw Bos coe Burns on his clean looking T riumph take firs t plac e la ure ls with Ed Enogits , also Triumph-mounted , ri ding to second place . Larry Blu m copped third on a G-50 Match le s s . Ron W ilson won the Open Amateur on a Matchless G-80, chased by Joe Boge r on a T riumph an d thi rd place to Gre,,; Feeney on a Norton 750. • • ., Banzai Bill Cooke (111) leads 175cc Amateur/Expert e.vent at thi s point, was overtaken by Rolli. Clarke (122) and David Brooks (385) before It was o ;,; - - - ;,;v,;;,er ,_ _ All- out, twenty-nine-year-old Larry Wilburn did s ome real fin e rid in g to snatch top honor s in the Exp er t Open on his movin g Tr iumph 650. La rry is from Lancaster and bel ongs to the Ramblers M.C. He see med to find the groove ri ght from the start a nd proceede d from the re to the checkered flag . Stev e Pride horn, a lso on a T riumph, took sec and. Hard-luck Bill Ril ey took a fall or two early in the ra ces a nd decided , s ince he was so far be hind , that he would teach the spectators lessons on whee li e s.
