Th ey left abo ut 15 minutes before the big bikes and ran three 15-mile loops . The course was just great; it was easy going all the way. Frank Morgan was le adi ng until a few feet from the finis h he crashed real ha rd an d that put hi m third ove rall. Earl Roesele r too k first with David Willlams comi ng In second. The first girl i n was Jan Dits on, finishi ng sixth. Ste ve Hedgecoth was doin g well unt il he crashed an d his gas tank came off, but he tied the ' ta nk down and continued on to finish 14th . Rosemarie Martino enjoyed t he day by sitting along t he trail and watching the race , as he r machine lost a screw from the primary case and s he had to quit. He was busier than a bird dog in a field full of grouse ru nning between t he two machines. There was barely time between races to swallow some water, wash off the top two layers of dirt a nd jump Into the saddle again. It was lucky for him that his section of the 250 class was the thir d group, as the 175-200s ran ri ght in front of the 250 motos . Ekins Is Something Else Th e Open Cl a ss went to Bud Ekins. In t he firs t mot o, Bud got a bad s ta rt and was far back in the pack before working his way up . He won by a wheel. We wish a sp rinkle r system rea ll y capable of putting out gallons of water could be s et up, because the circuit provides the real old-fashioned kind of rough scrambles that is fast disappe ar ing from our local scene. Th e 50- 100cc class went to Norman Banham on a Hoda ka, a nd this particular Hodaka has the tront en d out to the re with extensions welded into the frame to do it. T he 50 class seems to be dying on the vine a nd this we hate to see, but it seems inevitable as t he machines keep changi ng and becomi ng faster each ye ar . Anyway , Chuck Ba sn ey took a t hir d overall i n t he com bined class on his potent 50 . Al t hough given a hea ds tart e ach time (being on a smaller machine ), he sh owed the troops t hat a well-ridden 50 is s till a mac hin e to be reckoned wi th . The 2:iOcc c lass wa s dominated by Malcolm Smith and hi s Husqvama. Rid in g against such charger s a s Phil Bowers, Harry Gre enle e . Rus s Darnell and Walt Axthelm, th e Husky Just ate them up. At one tlme , Axthelm got past Smith on the start and with Malcolm close behind hlm, led throu gh the light, twis ty seetion onto what cons ti tute s the siraight at Irvine. Right then Smith took a handful of throttle, blew pa st Axthelm and that was all she wrote. Th e 350 cc c lass fe ll to En gli s hman Alan F ox on a Honda. T his is a machine tha t at a fi rst quick glance you would s wea r was a Triu mph. Set up for real rough goi ng , the machine looks like a nd , a t times, goes like a big Open ctass job. 1. And when Ga ry wi ns, he works for it. At t he s moke bomb, he was about te nth and he had to ea t dus t an d work his way up through t he pack to ge t the le a d, but this Is whe re he shines and app ear s to be enjoying it.
