Van Leeuw en was second , Dan Haaby third and Hammer fourth in the Quick two-Iapper that pitted the fastest four against eac h ot he r lor the gold. Romero's stlffest test ca me in th e heat rac e when Haaby pulled e ven co rning out of the fi nal turn . A good j ob of riding high and right to the wall kept Romero in front and prevented a Gene kept th e fans wat ching and breathless wll h his wid e open, ful l bore l eaps ove r th e famous Ascot j ump. Har d-ridi ng John Bradford charged his way i n for the fastest heat ra ce win, but the mach ine agai n prove d to be master ov e r the rid er. Lap after lap in the final , t he bounc in g Brad ford found himse If more off the machine than on, in a desperat e effort to take the l ead. The machine finally pitched him on his head to rule out any chances of a win. Gen e Cannad y again displayed goo d lorm to win his s econd s traight nov ice final and again close th e point gap on l ead er , J ohn Sprague . Bakersfield's Roy Spik er made a clo se rac e of II in the early stages but shifting prob! ems dropp ed him back to third a t the finish. The next IT, the last before the National So-Iapper, goes the firs t Saturday ni ght i n July. Th e most recent cam e very c lose to topping the best non-national purse mark as II paid over $2700. to the riders last Saturday night. Romero was so busy shaking hands lhat he forgot to pick up his $SOo-p lus winnings. What price fame ?
