It was hot, dry and d usty on the Buzzards' course , wit h the r iders p lunging into one sandwash after another, scali ng hills and rambling through cobby desert. Another 40 trail riders tried the first lap of the course on their machines of less than 100cc's and 27 of them finished. H 0 n d amounted Earl Roeseler was the first trail rider in. Bill Menchen, Hod a ka, was second. Novices scored extremely well in the big race, with Honda-mounted J . N. R ob er ts taking lOth overall a nd first in the 250cc novice class. Rick did much be tter in the t ro phy dash, winning it by a bike length ov er B ala a m . Keith Mashburn was able t o r epeat h is performance of two w eeks ago in th e 50cc main. Probably two of ·t he m ost competiti ve r id ers a nd closes t friends are Keith Ma shburn and Dave S m ith, a n d th ey have continually battled throughout the en ti r e season for the first pla ce po sition in the 50cc class.
