THORWALDSON FIRST IN SPOKEBENDERS DESERT BASH Ri ch Thorwaldson, picking up w here Gary Conrad left off, won the Spokebenders hare scrambles on a 250Cc Bultaco Oct . 17. Th is was the second- str ai ght desert win by a lightweight, Con r ad having won the Checker s hare and hound the pr evi ous week on a 250cc Greeves. Thorwaldson beat . 102 heavywe ights and 108 other lightweightsinclud ing 28 under 100cc - across NEW 250 SPEED RECORD George Roeder, six-ti me national champion from Monroeville, Ohio, added new laurels to his 12-year career la st week, breaking the AMA class C record twice on the salt flats at Bonneville, Utah. The 250Cc record was set last year by Roger Reiman on a Harley-Davidson Spri n t at 156 mph. Roeder came back this year for the Milwaukee factory to run a two-way average of 170 mph. then top this w ith a new, alltime record run of 176.817 mph for a two-way average that tops bo th the class C (gas) and the class A (fuel) records. The 250cc Spri n t model that was used for the record 176 m ph run was developed from a standard prod uction engine en closed in a full shell streamliner.
