But one must stop occasionally or speed up for traffic, and th is wrecks that plan, As Cal ex pl ained , the best plan is to b reak t he average down into minu tes-per -mile and write t his down on a lit tl e grid ta ped to the t op of y our tank. So with an announced average of, say, 30 mph your grid would look like this: MILES M INU TES 2 2 4 3 6 etc. Then, us ing a large pocket watch hung on a strap a round your neck, you can determine how many miles from the last check you should ha ve traveled by any given minute. Cal resets his large watch to 12 at each check. And here is a secret Cal d idn't make us promise not to tell: To elirnate the difference between his speedo and the organizer's, Cal determines the "speed o error," or di ffe r e nce, and resets hi s odometer over or u nder 00000 to compensa te.
