Issue number 48 from 50 years ago was apparently so popular that
we ran out of them, so we have to skip it this week an move right on
to number-48 40 years ago. At that time, we were impressed with
the 120-horsepower output of the new Kawasaki KZ1300 sport
tourer, so we thought we'd show you the ins and outs of the its
1286cc four-stroke six-cylinder engine… We covered the Maywood
M.C.'s Toys For Tots Grand Prix and Sunrise Valley Cycle Park in
Adelanto, California… We also had full coverage of the Desert M.C.'s
Diamondback Enduro. Tom Webb was the beneficiary of Jay Tullis'
miscalculation at the final secret check that Tullis burned, handing
Webb the overall victory… We featured a test on Bob Hannah's
factory OW-39B-810 Yamaha
YZ425… Scott Burnworth
was tearing it up on the local
MX scene, winning the 125cc
Pro class at Carlsbad.

LOOKING BACK
Barstow-to-Vegas was our cover story 30 years ago. We ran a photo
of the 1200-rider-strong start line and a shot of the overall winner,
Bruce Ogilvie, receiving his first-place trophy from the awards banquet
in Las Vegas… Sam Ermolenko dominated the U.S. Long Track
Championship. He beat out Bobby Schwartz for the $2000-plus
cash prize… We tested the 1989 Honda CR250RK motocrosser… We
covered the Totta Cup Observed Trials from Pampa, Texas. The winner?
Shan Moore… Jeremy McGrath was making a name for himself locally
after winning the Pro MX class at Perris Raceway ahead of Warren Reid,
Willy Musgrave and Ed Arnet.
