VOL. 48 ISSUE 44 DECEMBER 13, 2011 P143 For the first time this year, Alex Kortepeter claimed the Ironman Expert win. had no right to save that!" But he managed to stay upright and ahead, while Pearson completed the first lap well within striking distance on his Precision Concepts/Dunlop/O'Neal CRF450X. Pearson had the luxury of knowing that second place was all he needed, however, and though he made a race of it, 15 seconds on adjusted time was as close as he was going to get. CN ized 15 minutes for passing in Pit One's no-passing zone, thus handing over the class win to Tuffy Pearson and Jeremy Purvines. In final points, however, the Canepas still earned the number-one plate in 250cc Pro. C7 SCOTT GLIMP 1ST OVER-40 PRO While he didn't quite match the record of his younger Purvines Racing Honda compatriots David Fry and Jason Trubey who won their class at all six BITD races this year, Scott Glimp didn't fare too badly, winning five out of the six aboard his Decal Works/Fuel Clothing/Kal-Gard CRF450X. "It was so dark on the start you couldn't tell the depth of any of the whoops, you really couldn't see them, with the headlight it would flash in and out of them so it was just crazy," he said. "The 250s all caught me before the first pit. I'm like, 'They're going way too fast this early in the morning for me!' I just took it easy and once I could see on the second and third lap, I made a couple adjustments on my suspension so I could hit the whoops and pound them a little harder. Once I did that, I could rail it. It turned out good--no crashes." 506 DON CAMPBELL/ERIC CAUDILLO 1ST OVER 30 EXPERT "We led from start to finish," Don Campbell said. "We were the first bike off [the line in our class] so [my partner] Eric [Caudillo] rode the first lap and a half [and] I rode the second. We stayed in front of these guys (runners-up Brian MacKenzie/Jason Piper/Donald Starks) and beat them by about 30 seconds at the end! We needed this win for the championship; we were running in second place and a win, I think, will do it for us. (Indeed, Campbell and Caudillo would take the Over 30 Expert championship by just six points, 425-419, on their THR Motorsports/Hoosier Precision Machining/Precision Concepts CRF450X.) 140-143 Henderson 250.indd 143 338 GREG PARKER/BILL WILLIFORD 1ST OPEN EXPERT After riding Open Amateur all season (winning three), Parker Builders/BOR Racing/Friends & Family CRF450X-mounted Greg Parker and Bill Williford bumped up to Open Expert for the season finale in order to take advantage of the double points offered. "The reason we bumped up was because we're trying to go for the number-one plate and we're behind by 15 points for the Open [motorcycle title]," Parker explained. "The only way to get it was by bumping up so we went for it. I was a little nervous, but I just kept my cool and went for it." As for the race itself, Parker said, "Each lap [we] just got faster and faster." 707 MARK DAVIDGE/KENJI GAUTHIER/ TOM WILLIS 1ST OVER-40 EXPERT It pays to hold on to your old bikes, especially the race bikes. That's the lesson that paid off for Mark Davidge/Kenji Gauthier/ Tom Willis after winning Over-40 Expert on their Fantastic Indoor Swap Meet KTM 300 XC. "We had the KTM 520 that we were going to use - the bike we used at Vegas to Reno - and it broke in the garage last night," Davidge said. "We have no idea what happened; the motor locked up. All that time and effort, then all of a sudden. We had this 300 and it wasn't working so well when we got done at the Silver State 300; we just parked it. So we rode this thing today with fifth gear not even working, but we knew all we had to do was just finish to win the points title. That's all we cared about. I woke up with the flu so I couldn't ride. Just to pull it off the way we have is kind of funny." 12/12/11 1:49 PM
