RAMIREZ WRANGLES TECATE SPRINT ENDURO T he Los Ancianos MC changed up the format their annual northern Baja race this year to offer a new challenge to off-roaders in their annual Tecate event. Following last year's extremely tough enduro, the club opted for a Sprint Enduro for 2015 (December 5), which offered a far more fun and relaxed day of racing. No matter the format, many off-road racers mark the Tecate event on their calendar as a "must attend" each year, including recently crowned AMA National Hare & Hound Champion Ivan Ramirez. The Baja native put icing on the cake of his championship-winning year with a victory at the Los Ancianos Tecate Sprint Enduro, besting Justin Morgan and Kyle Red- mond for the overall win. "I always look forward to this race," said Ramirez who is always a local hero at the Los Ancianos event. "It was different. The tracks were fun and I liked that we got to sprint for a little bit and then get to rest and hang out with friends. It was a little bit dusty, but it was a lot of fun." For many, including Ramirez, it was the first time compet- ing in a Sprint Enduro format, which put riders through three different courses—each one 5-8 miles in length—twice throughout the day. There was a mountain course, an enduro course and a grass track (though the cool, windy conditions left the grass track more of a dust bowl by the end of the day). Another Baja regular—Justin Morgan—was second-quickest on the day, earning a second- place finish. Morgan, who recently competed in the Baja 1000 with Robby Bell's Precision Concepts team, kept Ramirez honest throughout the day and even topped him on the moun- tain test, but ultimately couldn't match the pace of the Red Bull KTM factory rider.
