Brown and D_avis rule Austin By John Rannikko AUSTIN, TX.JAN. 6 The first race of the decade here at Austin's MX track marked the return of Roger Brown after several months of retirement. Brown 24 garnered first overall in the combined 250/0pen Expen class aboard a Perrin Cycles of San Antonio-sponsored big bore Can-Am. Brown's comeback was almost spoiled by Honda of Austin rider, Keith Davis, who swapped wins but lost out due to Brown's better placing in the second moto. Tim Butler, who holds National NMA Championships in four classes rode a TC Racing Yamaha to a pair of smooth firsts in the 125cc Intermediate class. Mediocre starts kept Butler fighting traffic most of the day. Pan of that traffic was a hard-charging John Ham who got the holeshots, but succumbed to Butler's. superior riding and settled for a pair of seconds. Yamaha/Moto-X Fox-sponsored Bryan "B~ Bandit" Taylor celebrated the stan of the 'year with his first race since he broke a leg during football season two months ago. A recent graduate from the ranks of minibikers to the 125cc Expen class, Taylor showed his racing savvy u he holeshot the fim moto ahead of John Bersch (Hon), Russell Powers (Suz), Keith Davis (Hon) and Ronnie Taylor (Hon). The "Bandit" continued to lead and put a little distance between himself and Bersch and Davis who were fighting for second. By lap three, Bersch and Davis, began closing on Taylor until Davis made a small error in a tum and dropped off the pace a bit. By midmoto, Bersch was on Taylor's tail and looking for a place to pass. He'd been trailing Taylor for several laps down the front straightaway and over the high speed jump and saw a chance to oudly Taylor on the left side of the jump. The "Bandera Bandit" had been taking the center line over the jump and staying near the ground, but when they took the jump, with Taylor barely ahead, he corrected with a mild crossup as he drifted to the left l only to find Bersch flying above him and catching his front wheel. on Taylor's handlebar. The crash that followed was horrendous, as bikes and riders went tumbling along the track sending spectators scurrying for cover. Fonunately neither rider was seriously injured. Bersch remounted very slowly aboard his heap of scrap-iron (bent frame, dented tank, etc.) and finished last while Taylor dragged himself off the track and DNF. Davis grabbed the lead as Taylor and Bersch crashed and rode it to the checkered. Powers finished second with Ronnie Taylor a very close third. Both Bryan Taylor and Bersch pulled it together for the second moto as the "Bandera Bandit" once again rocketed ahead off the stan. This time Davis, Berscb and Powers followed through the first tum. The first lap had Taylor in front with Davis in pursuit, but Bersch had Powers and Ronnie Taylor in front of him in a tight pack. Everyone played follow-the-leader until the seventh lap when a lot of things happened. Davis took Taylor on the inside as they radiused a high waDed sandy berm before the finish line and put five sec· onds on him in 'the following laps before the checkered flag flew. On the same lap 'Bersch made a pass on an uphill in the back section putting himself ahead of Powers and Ronnie Taylor in one smooth move. The finishing order was Davis. Taylor, Bersch, Powers and Ronnie Taylor who failed in an attempt to dive under Powers in the last tum. killing his engine and almost highsiding. The 250cc and Open Experts raced together in a combined class and Roger Brown.(C-A) found the front off the stan with Davis (Hon), Jack Hicks (Yam) and Doug Paley (Hon) in his slipstream through the first tum. The front spot belonged to Brown through the early laps while Davis bad~red the leader on a 250cc Honda and Hicks held third on a new Kasson's 465cc Yamaha. Dave Stutts of San Antonio was in founh place on a 250cc monoshocker. riding on the Yamaha support program through Yamaha of San Antonio, followed by Chris Laftin
