• AlIda -Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington·ldaho-Utah·Alaska-Canada-Northern California·Northern Nevada·Oregon-Washington-ldaho-Uta five full laps despite his unconnected and nopping rear brake assembly. The lead was inherited by Pat O'Connell (Mai) who had fought successfully with John Volk (Mai) for the number two spot. Meanwhile, David Woodall (Mai) had been making steady progress up through the pack and by the time O'Connell stalled his engine in a tight tum during. the ninth lap, Woodall was right there to claim first place and keep it to the finish. The last lap banle was between Rodney Smith (Yam) and Jason Lamou~aux (Yam) who finished second and third respectively. In molO two, Woodall had the holeshot with Lamoureaux and Ingle· bright close I behind. Woodall reshuffled himself to the back of the pack with a first lap crash and by the third lap, O'Connell was leading followed by Inglebright and Lamoureaux. Those positions held for the next seven laps, but in the last stages of the race, O'Connell's bike failed him and he DNF. Lamoureaux finally got in front of Ingl~bright by literally jumping right past him into the worst mud hole on the track. It looked desperate, but it worked. Woodall had again been spending his time doing some brilliant riding which resulted in his crossing the finish line in third place giving him second overall. The handful of Open Novices entered lined up on the first lap and stayed almost in formation throughout their first moto. Tom Pietri (Suz) holeshot and led with Don Wilson (Yam) a strong second until the final lap which Wilson did not finish. Third place, which became second when Wilson dropped out, was reshuffled when Kirk Caner (Mai) lost control in a mudhole and left the track long enough to let George Stephenson (Mai) and Tom Sweeney (Yam) by. Carter had the holeshot in mot{) two but Pietri was soon enough in command. Carter and Wilson both went down together leaving Sweeney . to move into second to stay. Virtually all of the 125cc Experts. were mounted on Suzukis except Arnold Plant who rode a Honda and Keith Myers on a Kawasaki. Moto one saw Joe Martin first off the lIne with Spoof Pena close behind. Pena moved into the lead during the third lap and on the sixth, Mike Beier came up behind to challenge him. On the ninth lap both Beier and Plant got by Pena and they finished in that order. Pena and Beier headed the second moto riding a close one-two the first four laps. During the fifth lap they were wheel-to·wheel in the long back sweeper, first one and then the other claiming the edge. It was Beier who was fmt out of the tum and with no one in front to stop him, he new off to finish a half-minute ahead of Pena. Chris Ladd (Suz) was through the hole first in moto one of the 125cc Intermediates followed by Berkeley White (Suz), but it was Mike Whalen (Suz) who soon moved into the lead and clearly dominated ooth motos. Ladd held second until the white nag was out but pulled off in the last lap leaving second place to White. Larry Matthews (Yam) took the hole· shot in the second moto but he couldn't seem to handle the mudhole, falling several times. Whalen again left all the others behind. Jim Frampton (Suz) held onto second in front of John McCapes (Suz) for most of the race but McCapes got past him by taking the outside in the muddy turn. Frampton crashed in the next tum trying not to let White by and did not finish. McCapes finished second in the moto for third overall. Randy Blair scored a perfect I-I with his Yamaha in the 250cc Experts. D. Scon Henden (Yam) was in for second in moto one but Phil Crane, also on a Yamaha, combined a second place finish in moto two with a fourth for second overall. Ron Combs (Kaw) consistently finished 5 and 5 for third overall. Riders who were not here this time will get another chance. The next race at Argyll Park is scheduled for Feb. 10. Bledsoe, Stubblefield & Vargus shake Bakersfield By Judy Greenberg Photo by Bob Greenberg BAKERSFIELD, CA,JAN. 20 With the return of the California sun came a good turnout of riders ready to compete at Sprockets Park with American Motocross Enterprises. A pair of wins put Jeff Stubblefield (Hon) on top of the 250cc Pro class. He was hounded by Danny Thompson's Valley Cycle Can-Am as they left the line. When Thompson went down on the second lap. Stubblefield started to build his lead, with the Fresno Yamaha of Damon Webb secure in second. Mike Bosworth (Hon) and his Valley Cycle teammate, Mike Yafchak (C-A) were in a heated banle . for. third. Stubblefield looped his bike on the downside of a hill, but made a quick recovery to stay in front to the wire. Webb held second to finish in front of Bosworth who won his duel with Yafchak. Thompson holeshot the second molO also, but Stubblefield was in control by the end of the first lap. Webb fought his way past Thompson to pressure Stubblefield. He managed to take over for a lap, but Stubblefield reclaimed the lead and used the high side of the berms to stay there while Webb pressed from below. Thompson had problems and retired from the moto while Bosworth and Yafchak finished third and fourth. Suzuki-mounted Brian Vargus took the win in the 500cc Pros with a 2-2 ride. Steve Williams' Bakersfield Yamaha was the early leader until the KTM of Tom Kelly slipped underneath and moved out in front. Williams, Darren Oliver (Yam) and Vargus swapped the second spot, with Vargus finishing behind Kelly. followed by Oliver, Williams and Rusty Baron (Mai). The second gate showed Doug Lawrence in front on his Suzuki, from Allen Hopper 12AI looks for a spot to land tHtfore passing Mark Moscrop at AME Bakersfield. S.L.O. Baron passed Oliver to move into third behind Vargus. They closed in on Lawrence and the trio diced hot, and heavy. swapping the lead with Baron taking final command. Vargus was left to fend off Lawrence 10 the finish. Oliver and Steve Richard finished fourth and fifth. Mark Bledsoe (Electro-Yam) went back-to-back in the 125cc Pros. Jon Nelson (Hanford Suzuki) controlled most of the f1J'St moto with Bledsoe and Allen Hopper (Yam) close behind. The Suzukis of David Manhire, Brett Mosekian and Dave Strong diced for fourth which was snatched by Tom Kelly. Manhire kept close on Kelly's heels and reclaimed the spot. With three laps to go, Nelson ran into trouble and DNF. Bledsoe took the win, followed by Hopper, Manhire and Mark Moscrop. The second time, Bledsoe took it all the way. Hopper, Moscrop and Man· hire kept the fans on their feet with a battle that continued to the wire. It took Moscrop six laps to take second from Hopper, only to lose it to Manhire a couple laps later. Moscrop went down, and Manhire lost control putting Hopper back in second. the final lap Hopper hit the dirt giving Manhire second and Moscrop third. • Results 500 PRO: 1. Brian V.gus ISu.l: 2.
