The Louisville National was one of our major
feature stories 50 years ago. Bart Markel
fought his way past Dan Haaby to take the
win… Larry Bergquist and Gary Preston
teamed up to win the Stardust 7-11 Off-Road
Championship Race near Las Vegas. We made
it known that they also beat the top-finishing
four-wheeler… Our Meet The Dealer column
featured Auburn Suzuki owner Don Rhodes…
We covered the first AMA Mammoth
Mountain Motocross. Bill Pettigrew was the
Overall Sweepstakes winner.
Our preview of the Superbowl VII of Motocross was our cover story
40 years ago… Skip Askland won the AMA Grand National Road Race
at Loudon's Bryar Motorsports Park in New Hampshire… Bob Hannah
went 1-1 at the 250cc National Motocross in St. Peters, Missouri, and he
clinched the title; Mike Bell won the 500cc class… Bernie Schreiber
won the Wagner Cup in Pennsylvania… Broc Glover, Marty Moates
and Sherman Schneller were some of the big winners at the Mammoth
Mountain Motocross.
