LOOKING BACK
We plastered the front page of Cycle
News 50 years ago with some of our
favorite shots from the Viewfinders
Grand Prix held at Westlake Village in
California. Some of the course utilized
a section of an old western movie set…
Dave Damron was racking up the
wins in road racing action from Willow
Springs… Bart Markel captured his 22nd
career national victory at the Fairgrounds
Half Mile in Reading, Pennsylvania…
DeWayne Keeter ran off with the cash at
the Ascot Park Half Mile.
We previewed the upcoming 500cc U.S. GP motocross at Carlsbad
Raceway. We asked the burning question: Can Bad Brad do it?... We
covered the Denver Gold Cup Half Mile. Jay Springsteen claimed the
win, his first of the 1978 season… Bob Hannah finally lost a moto—to
Marty Tripes—but not the overall victory in the 250cc class at the
AMA National MX in Waco, Texas… Kenny Roberts tightened his grip
on the 500cc GP Championship with another win in Mugello… Frank
Gallo won the Michigan Two-Day.
