California politics grabbed the headlines in 1988. We reported that
California Senator Pete Wilson was going to back Alan Cranston's
Senate Bill 7 (S7) that would shut down nine million acres of land in
the California desert. And, the helmet law was about to be enacted
in California… Steve Morehead won the San Jose Mile… Jeff
Ward and George Holland mastered the sand at Southwick… Terry
Vance won the Pro Stock class at the NHRA round in Memphis.
Ricky Carmichael wheelied his way on the to the cover of Cycle
News 20 years ago after winning the 125cc class at High Point;
Ezra Lusk was the big winner in the 250cc class… Scott Parker
won the Springfield Mile… It was a rainy Circuito de Albacete World
Superbike round, but Ducati shined with winners Pier-Francesco
Chili and Carl Fogarty… We packed up the bikes, kids, family and
friends and headed to the desert for our entry-level and small bike
comparison test.

race good-luck kiss at the half-mile national in Pennsylvania 50
years ago. Evidently it worked because he took the win.
