"We were the fastest in the last qualifier and we won our heat. I sucked in the semi because I got a bad start. I wasn't able to get to the front and Jeffrey [Carver] was flying," said Mees of his third place semi result. When the 18-rider field filed out to pick their starting positions, semi winners Jeffrey Carver (Roof Systems/Indian of Metro Milwau- kee, Indian Scout FTR750) and Kenny Coolbeth (Nila Racing/ Columbia Avionics, Indian Scout FTR750) chose to start on the bot- tom of the racetrack. That proved to work for Carver, not so much for Coolbeth. Briar Bauman (Zanotti Racing/ Western Powersports, Kawasaki Ninja 650) got off the line first, but Carver's inside line gave him the advantage. For an instant Carver opened a lead with Mees, Bauman and Brad Baker (Indian Motorcy- cle/Allstate Insurance, Indian Scout FTR750) all fighting for second. Once Mees worked his way clear in second, he rapidly ran down Carver and dove inside going into turn one on lap five. "I got off kind of with them and then studied them a little bit," said Mees.
