Chuck "Feets" Minert was pictured
on the cover of Cycle News 50 years
ago. He and Gunnar Lindstrom battled
it out in the 500cc Expert class at
Saddleback Park. They each won a
moto but using time as a tiebreaker,
Lindstrom was declared the overall
winner. This was the first motocross
race ever held at the Saddleback site.
Spectators loved it for its excellent
viewing… We covered the Coyotes
M.C. hare scrambles at California City,
where Larry Bergquist claimed the
overall victory.
We had a little bit of everything on the front page 40 years ago, including a
photo of Bob Hannah winning the Pontiac Supercross in Michigan. Kenny
Roberts was also pictured for winning the 250 GP in Venezuela; Barry
Sheene topped the 500cc class… Saddleback Park hosted the opening
round of the Coors Trans-AME MX Series; Gary Denton, Chappy Blose and
Scott Gillman were the big winners… Larry Roeseler won the 6th Annual
Great Bear Grand Prix at Riverside International Raceway.
