Problems staned in practice with the Pee Wee. unable to find the track land swimming upstream, creating their own course. When it came time to get down to some serious racing, the track had been reworked by Walt James and his crew, racers trapped in the mud rescued, and water·logged bikes dried out. One of the first classes to take on the storm were the 500cc Juniors, mud- whompers at beanl Throughout their first moto. Don Hoover kept his Ya· racers had one ofthe wildest and hairi- est rides of the day. Intermediate And,.welinger kicked his Yamaha out in front and led the charge up the hill. only to go down on the backside of the track in a pile·up that snared several racers. Emerging out of the chaos was Junior Kevin Beckenhauer with Mike Maurer aboard a Suzuki from Fresno and Pat lmperatrice firing at him through every turn and over every jump. Beckenhauer found himself starring to lap several riders. The downhill claimed several racers in one giant mud slide as racers con· tinued to plow into each other, adding to the pile-up. Intermediate Chris Lewis snuck on by and took over second. Closing in fast on Lewis was Vincent Pirlo. Beckenhauer continued to slide and careen his way down to the finish line only to fmd Pirlo move into second, then take away the lead in a classic photo fmish. When the last mud·splattered rider came home. Pirlo had gathered the gold for the Juniors, Beckenhauer sec- ond and Maurer third. In the Inter· mediates, Welinger claimed top honors, Lewis took down second and third went to Mark Rouff. The second division of 125ccJuniors plowed through the water on their ftnt lap like a pack of swam/? buggies. Leading was Bob Engel. HIS Yamaha found Suzuki-mounted Rina Navera hot on its tail with Tony Tetone on a TCW tight in third. For most of the moto, the race be- longed to Engel and Navera. These two stayed closer than a pair of water moccasins, inches apan everywhere on the track. With one lap to go. Tetone made his move into second and starred to close on Navera who shonly before had taken over the lead. When the checkered flag welcomed them home, Navera picked up the gold. Tetone took down second and Engel, who had been in command for mOlt of the race, scooped up third. Results 1Suzl; 3. CIlrio _ CSuzI. 50cc WT: 1. _ .-, ISuzl; 2. __T_ PEE WEE: 1.
