- o 00 ~ E oocI grassrooIs - MX g By Mel White BLOOMFIELD, CA, FEB. 10 The motocrOS5er's dream of friendly yet worthy competition on a fine uncrowded track close to home was realized for the 120 Sonoma County riders who accepted the invitation of Din Riders, Inc. to race at their club property in Bloom- field, CA today. The Dirt Riders had obviously invested the time and energy needed to provide an excellent track and a well·organized sequence of events. What tbey lacked in experience was more than compensated for by their open, friendly flexibility. The goal of a safe, satisfying day of motocross was definitely achieved. Robert Brookins holeshot the first moto of the Old Timers but by the lap's end Rich Doble was in front. Brookins dogged Doble's every move to cross the finish line second to Doble. In the second moto Doble was hot off the line and running flTlt until the third tum when his bike loaded up and quit. The others had almost gone all the way around before Doble got going again, but he was able to reclaim enough lost positions to score second overall. Richard Washburn holeshot moto one of 125cc Division One followed by Greg Franc and all the others. The second lap was decisive when some overanxious leaders fell and Berkeley White" pulled in front to stay. It was still a race, however, between White and Franc who pulled ahead of the others but not away from each other. White fmisbed first, Franc second. Moto two looked pretty much the same with Franc ahead for the flTlt lap and a half before trading with White. Division Two of the 125s was totally dominated by Wiley Dean Craig riding a SllZuki. Craig holeshot both motos and actually had a noticeable lead coming around the first tum. In the first moto Dennis Stolp came off the line in second and kept it followed by Ron Picken. In moto two, Mike Selitsch was behind Craig at the start but Stolp soon traded up to fmish second, Selitsch third. By the checkered flag Craig was a full 45 sec- onds ahead which gave him plenty of time to get lined up on his 250 to ride back·to-back motos in two classes. D. Stirling had the holeshot in moto one (25Occ Division One) but the real battle was between Craig's Suzuki and K. Palmer's Maico. Together they pulled out far enough to begin lapping riders by mid-race. Craig finished ahead of Palmer in moto one, but moto two saw Jim Jepsen running off with the starting line bonors and leading. Craig experienced bizarre problems with a gas line that was too short and they put him too far back to score well. Palmer reaped first overall, Jepsen second and Stirling third. Moto one of Di~on Two of the 26 2505 came off the line with Berkeley White in front followed by Ron Grey, M. Petersen, and Jay Costa. That order prevailed to the fmish. Moto two saw Grey as the early leader who traded first with White and then with Petersen. Petersen, with consistent fast laps, pulled well ahead of White and Grey who both lost time stalling in the comers and both even fell once. At the ENORiHEiiN-oiiiiE·rC;;;;)pi;.d;';;N_N"'~_~W--""~"" ~ Dirt Riders put on , checkered flag Petersen was 50 seconds to the good followed by White and then Grey. _ Dave Allen managed to be aboard tbe first bike into the first tum in both Open Novice motos, but Tom Phillis led across the finish line in both cases. Allen crashed in the second tum in moto one and had to struggle up from last place to score well enough to place third overall. Craig Pierce followed Phillis up out of the pack and took home second place brass for his efforts. Local races such as this one could go far toward fulfilling the needs of moto- cross enthusiasts by providing an alter- native to long expensive commutes to overcrowded race tracu without diminishing the' quality of the racing itself. It is hoped that the Dirt Riders will continue to provide this alterna· tive for Sonoma County riders. Mem- bership information is available from Bruce at 707/542-8279. Results MINIS: 1. O. I The "open traction" short track oval came as a surprise to many entrants who arrived expecting the usual rough scrambles track. The new course, cut around the inside of the corral, is about one·fifth of a mile long and tends to favor the class "C" rigs although knobbies are allowed. Mike Faria proved.. that motocross bikes could handle the track as he came from nowhere to win the Open Expert main event. Alan McGehee took the lead on the first lap followed closely by David Boyles, John Tavis and Tracy Hayes. Hayes quickly moved £rom fourth into the lead with McGehee and Tavis still pressuring. Boyles got a bit off the line and dropped back to fourth. The dicing continued until, on lap 10, Mike Faria made his move from the middle of the pack to pick off the leaders one by one. Within two laps Faria had taken the lead and went on for the win in the most exciting race of the evening. In his usual form Alex Jorgensen grabbed the early lead in the 250cc Expert event leaving the race for second between Jeff Buckner and Danny Moore. Alex continued to stretch his lead and caught up with the back of the pack as Moore was able to get around Buckner for second. In the Vets/Old Timers' race Mike Underhill captured his first victory of the year as he took the lead early. Underhill held off the challenge ofJim Hartbauer who recovered from a bad start to press for the lead. Underhill was able to hold on and took the victory as Pen Parks snuck by Hartbauer at the finish line for second. Chris Riddle got the good start in the Open Novice main and held it for two laps until heat race winner Dana Fitzpatrick took the lead away. Dana stretched out the distanee on Riddle and Don Carroll until an unfortunate Tyler MX Sull."van, Wedd."ng and Day tuff at By Charlie Wiese TYLER, TX, FEB. 17 A cool east Texas breeze greeted the crowd of cycle enthusiasts on this fine day with exciting races goin' on all day. The day's racing was highlighted by an outstanding afternoon schedule that ended with Randy Sullivan, Derek Wedding and John Day taking top honors in the Pro events. The afternoon's racing got off to a blazing stan with "Terrible" Tim Butler (Yam) burning the competition in consecutive 125cc Intermediate motos. In round one Butler came from behind to win as Ben Clemens (Yam) and Randy Hatten (Kaw) battled for the second slot with Clemens getting the nod in round one. Round two, Butler slipped away from the pack early with another flawless ride on the "yellow bird" as Hatten came back in the deciding second moto to take second with Chuck Dawson (Suz) moving up to third in round two and Clemens following closely in the founh slot. Overall it was Butler, Hatten, Clemens and Dawson. 125cc Pro action followed with Randy "Fluid Form" Sullivan making his successful debut on a "red rocket." Sullivan was untouchable all afte.moon with smooth consistent rides in each of the 20-minute plua motos. In round one Sullivan depaned early as Terry Maddalazo (Suz), Ruben Alonzo (Suz) and Rick Lupp (Hon) were left to do battle. At the halfway point Sullivan was gone as Maddalazo held an edge over Alonzo and Lupp, who were having a close race, with Bud McInnis (Hon) in hot pursuit. Round one ended with Sullivan racing by himself, Maddalazo holding on to second, Alonzo third after Lupp became tired and dropped to fourth and McInnis a close futh. In round two, the "red rocket ace," Sullivan, departed early as in round one with crash on the last lap put him out of contention. Riddle came away with the victory with Carroll second. Parks came from back in the pack to grab third from Mike Painter. Jackie Stroski made his first start as a Junior in the Open Junior class and left the competition behind as he won both the heat race and main event. Underhill applied some pressure but at the finish line it was Stroski, Underhill andJoe Heckmann in third. Mini Expert Kurt Chandler is picking up where his older brother Doug left off as he won impressively over Chris Carr and Aaron Hill. Kurt shex into the lead and cruised out front as Carr and Hill diced for second. Hill, riding the new Honda, didn't seem to have it all to- gether and settled for third behind Carr. Results • ISuz).
