Based on rumors from reliable sources, we reported that 26-year-
old Freddie Spencer was going to announce his retirement from
professional racing… Bobby Schwartz was pictured on the cover 30
years ago after winning the California Spring Speedway Series… We
also tested the 1988 Yamaha YZ250 motocrosser… Kevin Brown
was the big winner at the Sand Flea 100 GNCC in North Carolina…

Mick Doohan was featured on the cover of Cycle News 20 years
ago to accompany our Grand Prix Special Issue… Kevin Windham
captured his second career supercross victory, this one coming in front
of his local fans at the Superdome in New Orleans. Ricky Carmichael
continued to dominate the 125cc East Championship… Travis Pastrana
won the Inaugural Freestyle Motocross Challenge at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway… We reported that bicycle manufacture Cannondale was
going to start building motorcycles… Curtis Adams won the opening
round of the Formula USA Championship at Willow Springs.
