A photo of a full grid at the Daytona
200 was on the cover of Cycle News
50 years ago. Harley-Davidson-
mounted Cal Rayborn was the big
winner. Yvon DuHamel, on a Yamaha,
and Art Baumann, also on a Yamaha,
finished second and third, respectively.
Rayborn lapped the 89-rider field with
a record-setting speed average of 102
miles per hour… Some of the top dirt
bike riders in the country, like J.N.
Roberts, Gunnar Lindstrom and Lars
Larson, spent the weekend mixing it
up at Carlsbad Raceway.

We featured an interview with 28-year-old Carter Alsop who was pictured on
the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. Alsop made history for being the first
woman to ever enter an AMA professional road race… We covered round four
of the Toyota Supercross Series at the Houston Astrodome doubleheader. Bob
Hannah won both nights… In France, Californian Bernie Schreiber made
history for being the first American to win an FIM World Championship Trials
event. He beat out Bultaco teammate Martin Lampkin for the win.
