VOL. 54 ISSUE 41 OCTOBER 17, 2017 P51 BYRNE SEALS SIXTH BSB CROWN S hane Byrne (Ducati) claimed a sixth British Su- perbike Championship crown at Brands Hatch in the most dramatic of circumstances, as his chief title rival and previous championship leader Leon Haslam (Kawasaki) crashed out of the deciding race three with brake failure. Haslam had struggled in the first two races, finishing fourth and 10th as Byrne took victory, meaning it was all to play for leading into race three, with only two points separating the pair leading into the race three final. Haslam was sitting in fifth place heading into the daunt- ingly fast Hawthorn Bend right hander when his front brake lever came back to the bar and the Derbyshire man went into the wall at over 170 mph. He sustained a broken left ankle, right wrist and bruised thumb in the crash, with Josh Brookes (Yamaha) taking the final race win of the season to finish up second in the series behind Byrne.
