TOP OF THE WORLD LAND SPEED TRIAL
T
he Top 1 Oil Top of the World
Land Speed Trial, the first-
ever world land-speed event to
be held in South America, con-
cluded on Tuesday, August 8,
and while the Top 1 Ack Attack
streamliner ran out of time in the
quest to reach 400 mph, there
were several other world re-
cords (pending FIM ratification)
set at the landmark event.
The spirit of adventure was
the prevailing theme as doz-
ens of racers, team members,
sponsors and media made the
trek south of the equator to the
world's largest salt flat in Uyuni,
Bolivia. Located on the Altiplano
("high plain") east of the An-
des, the Salar de Uyuni sits at
a staggering altitude of 12,000
feet, which provided a number
of challenges to the race teams
in their efforts. Though the track
itself was 15 miles of platinum
perfection, the cold weather,
limited daylight, altitude sick-
ness and overall remoteness of
the location triggered plenty of
complications. Yet in the end,
dramatic events, volunteer ef-
forts, and unexpected problems
followed by even less expected
solutions turned the week into
a remarkable story of persever-
ance.
