A lap later , both Beyer and Winn shot past Nelson and sta r ted to duel for th e lead. Near th e end of th e race, Winn made hi s move in a turn a t th e bo ttom of a downhill and passed Beyer. From th en on. th e race was all Winn's, bUI the overa ll went 10 Bever and hi s 1-2 sco re. In th e 25'Occ Pro class. OR, i\IAR. 17 Kawasaki rider Garry Beyer and Honda pi lot Rod Kell er were today's big winners at Clarks Branch MX; Beyer man- aged 10 n ip Yamaha-mounted Paul Winn in th e 125cc A-B class, while Kell er domin at ed the 250cc Pro class. At th e sta rt of the first 125cc race, Winn put hisO'Neal , Pjl -sponsored Yamaha in to th e lead but was closely followed bv Bever. However . Winn was on th e gas' and produced a fast a n d co n s is ten t pace t ha t Beye r cou ldn ' t quite mat ch . But, a few laps la ter, Winn stuf fed his Yamaha into a berm whi ch gave away, ca usi rig him to cras h. MAR. 24 David McLean cap tured both motos in th eOpen Pro class on a AXO/Norwalk/Hon/Yanl- sponsored Honda, while Suz- uki-mounted Russ Wageman pulled off two wins in th e 250cc Pro class today d uring Ca lifornia Moto sports Club's points race a t Sunrise Valley Cvcle Pa rk . " I' ve got to work on my sta rts," he sa id aft erward s. referring 10 hi s dead-last sta rts in both 250cc Pro rnotos. " I managed to work my way up 10 fin ish thi rd in both rnotos , but it was a st ru ggle." The 250cc Pro firsl moto front runners : Pete Murray. Willie Surrat t and Wageman took charge followed by Doug Hoover and Dave Welty. By lap three,Wageman took th e lead. w h i le Murra y d ropped 10 t hi rd a n d fad ed quickl y. In th e closing laps.Murray slowed to fifth. handing McLean a third a nd Darren Sharuga a fourth . After a two-lap sorting out per iod in moto two , Surratt had a one seco nd lead over Wageman. Welty and Me- Lean were dicinga few seco nds behind for the third spot. Halfway th ru the race, Wageman sta r red gain ing on Surratt, while Mcl.ean eased into a so lid th ird bUI sti ll far beh ind Sur- ra tt. By th e third lap. McLean made h is move past Foltz and Ortner 10 ta ke a solid lead and proceeded 10 open th e ga p by a second a lap for the remaining nine laps. Darren Shar- uga moved into second and Foltz into third as Ortner faded to finish eigh th. In the closing laps, Pete Murray worked his way aro und Foltz to secure third, while Rudi Zacsko jr. finished fourth. Peterson, Stith duel at Blitz Canyon hillclimb By Don DeYoung and Sandee Peterson GRANT S PASS, OR, MAR. 17 Ironhorse Enterprise's third hillclimb of a four race seri es came off with great success on an unusually 'dry day in the Pacific Northwest . Top competi tors from Los Angeles 10 Seattle faced off against two ver y challenging hi lls a t th e last scheduled even t before th e April 21st Pacifi c Northwest Cham- pionship. Mini and 100cc class competitors were faced with a new winner in th eir classes as Hi-Point, K.R .W., Number One Racin g-backed Robie Peterson blas ted hi s Honda 10 fir st pl ace. Mat Morris, the domi nant Mini-climber in Oregon mad e fin e rides for second- p lace honors in th e 100cc class. and co ns istent riding by j ason Cochran gave him the seco nd- place trophy in the Min is. Consistent is the on ly word to des- cr ibe o utstanding rid ing by j eff Campbell in tire class competition - he pro ceeded to score victo ries in four classes and runner-up behind Kerry Peterson in th e 500cc Stock class . As usu al , a battle for the top spots in th e 500cc class a t th e payoff table got quite heated as th e da y went on. World Hillclimb Champion Kerry Peterson put hi s Honda into th e number-one slo t with a first round blast over the top th at couldn't be bettered. though both ro unds of Stock class competition. Modified class actio n got under- way with first ro und fast times in 500ccand Open Modified. being held by Kerry Pet erson, with Steve Stith a nd Rod Cochran holding down second and th ir d. respectively.
