Ron Bur- key and John Lundgren. both +30 Amateurs. were a t th e lead of the next row and Pat Font evn and Bob Cooke topped th e Novice/Beginner sta rt . Sixbery nosed ahea d of Dawson by th e end of th e first lap and another Vet, J oh n Holmes, moved int o th ird. T hos e th ree fought from those posi- tions for th e rest of th e race and fin- ished in tha t order. Lundren slow ly reeled Burkey in and landed him on th e fourth lap to tak e th e Amateur lead a nd event ual wi n . Fonteyn dropped off the pace and Cookemoved into the lead to stay . T he Pros and Intermedia tes ran together, with all classes represent ed. Ken Zahrt , Brad McLeod and David Lynch exploded out of the Pro sta rt in a knot. McLeod was hot and put his Honda in front of Zahrr's almos t immediately. By the end of th e first lap. McLeod had a five-second lead over Zahrt and was on th e gas. Zahrt seemed to burn out abo ut mid-race and And y Ell is spooked hi s Suzuki in to seco nd. Ell is wen t on to fin ish second behind Mel.cod , and Zahrt got thi rd. Open Pro John Ferro out-powered 125cc Pro Rich T ru chins ki in the seco nd row drag race. Joe Hopk in s. on a 125cc Kawasaki. and Honda- mounted T ruc hinski, used the lighter bikes' agi li ty to slip around Ferro in the tight back section of th e co urse and fin ish lap o ne a t th e front of th e 125cc Interm ediate/ Open Pro row. T ru chinski trie d many times to catch Hopkin s, but ran out of time before he could pull th at tri ck. T hey fin- ished one and two in th e 125, c Pros and Ferro hung on to take first Open Pro. Shawn Wynn and Mick Elsberry were one and two of th e 250,c Int er- med iat es right from th e sta rt and never cha nged posi tion. fin ishing in tha t order. Mik e Kiedrowski was in his usua l position in th e 125, c Int er- media tes - first.
