Team Screamwins CRRC endurance By Dennis Spears COLLEGESTATION.T X. MAR. 17 The first Central Road Racing Club endurance race of th e year at T exas World Speedway wa s a big success . With 47 en tries. nearly everyone could find someone to race with in th e four- hour-long event. Houston Kawasaki (HWP) led th e fir st hour then T eam Scream (750cc Int erceptor) took th e lead and held if for th e rest of th e race. Riders Brian Craver. Mike Ryan & Richard Pres- cott of Roy's Racing were hotly pur- sued by Roy Thoma and WI'SGog- gan on a three-year-old Vision (1\ I\ \'S). T homa and Goggan were never more than one la p behind Team Scream a nd fini shed second by only 40 se- conds. T he race for third overall was a lso heavilv contested bvTearn Racer- hack (MWi». Orr ABILENE, TX, MAR. 17 The Open Pro classes proved La be serious business at the Taylor County Coliseum Indoorshort track andTTraces, with a full line-up to fire up th e Abi - lene spectators with pl enty of excite- ment, dirt track style. James Huddleston got into th e corner first in th e first Pro flat track heat, but Bill Herndon quickly passed him for th e lead and made th e win look easy. Huddleston held onto a comfortable second place ahead of Darrin Quinn and Mitch Houden. In heat two,Sammy Sweet got the hole- shot ahead of Charlie Orr and David Fisher. But Sweet's motor gave up after four laps of dicing with Orr for th e lead, leaving Orr well ahead of Fisher for the win. Garv Kidd held off Andy West for third place, In the main Orr got the holeshot, followed by Fisher, Herndon and Huddleston. By th e end of lap one th e line up was Herndon, Orr, Huddles- ton and T erry Poovey, while Fish er dropped to fifth . There was a tight three-way battle for th e lead , with Herndon holding off Orr and Poovey for the first half of th e race, On lap six, Orr got by Herndon on th e ou t- side, comin g out of turn two to tak e over the l ea~1. On lap seven' , Poovey 34 Honda/RaceReady/LBRT'sOrr took went to (he in side in turn one to drop Hern don to th ird place, the n on lap eight used the same move on Orr to cap ture over the lead for himself. Hern don th en took the inside line on la p 10 to regai n second from Orr. T he race ended with Poovey first, fol - lowed by Herndon, Orr and Fish er. With another holeshot, Arlington th e lead in the Trophy Dash ahead of Herndon, Fisher and Huddleston. Herndon pushed Orr hard , but co u ldn' t get by, finishing half a bike- length behind Orr. The Pro TT heats were split by Gardner Racing/Shoei Helmets- sponsored Poovey ahead of Wayn e Brannon, and T eam Pacesetter's Herndon over Fisher. Poovey took th e lead in th e main even t ahead of Fish er, Bobbv Shaw and Herndon. Herndon took third from Shaw by th e end of lap one, and on lap two Shaw went down in th e righthander. in front of Orr. It took Orr four laps to work his way back int o fourth place, and for Herndon it took an equal amount of time to get aro und Fisher for second. Poovey held on to the lead wire-to-wire, with Herndon taking a close second. T erry Tripp, after losing horse- power in th e number four turn on th e last lap of th e 250cc Amateu r short track heat race, p ushed h is Harley- Davidson across th e line for th ird behind James Harris and J erry Fun- derburg. Tripp came back for th e main event to battle with Harris and Raymond Hughey for th e lead . On the sixth lap, Tripp finally got aro und Harris on th e outsid e of turn two to take thewin. T he firs t 250cc Pro moro provided the best race o f th e day as Dennis Ost riem (Suz) pulled th e holesh ot with AndyTudor (KT ;\I )close behind. Ron Pomeroy(Suz) cruised in for third. with Jay Bird (Yam) lak ing fourth. A bad start in the second moto kept T udo r from cha llenging Ostriem, wh o led wire-to-wire. Ponu-roy rode hard for a well-earned second and Tudor sa lvaged himself a th ird. Bill Nelson (Hon) led th e sta rt of th e fir st 250cc B moto, In his wake followed Brian Bowers. Brad Ellis. Kip Ken yon. and Ron Thalheimer. Nelson. Bowers and Ellis quickly separated themselves from th e pack , with Nelson building up a good lead as Ell is closed in on second-placer Bowers. With less than a lap 10 go, Bowers went o ff th e tra ck. giving second to Ell is. At th e start o f th e second moto, Bowers gassed int o the lead with Nel- son and Ellis close behind. Ellis passed Nelson. th en closed in on Bowers. Ellis fin all y took th e lead when Bow- ers crashed . With hi s 2-1 finishes, th e overa ll went to Ellis with Nelson second and Bowers third. FEB. 17 An enthusiastic crowd of over 700 people cheered on 172 racers at the Las Vegas Moto- cross Park Sunday and saw Robert Naughton beat Kurt Henrick- sen in th e I25cc Pro class a fter some hard-fought ra cing. In the en d, though, it was Scott Underwood who managed to slip into second overall. Eri c Sackett finished third. In th e 250cc Pro class. there was a tight battle between Sean Steele, Lenny Giger and Ri cky Ruppert. When th e dust had sett led, St eele was found leading the pack a t the check- ere d flag , while Dav e Townsend managed taking seco nd. Ruppert ended up losing his seat. Five riders were on th e start ing line for th e 500cc Pro race, and afte r all th e racing was done, Bill y Hill was found lead in g- th e pa ck. Hill ended up winning. while T im Sparks, An- th ony Pasqualouo, Barry Hill and Don Fuller followed . The largest class of the day was th e 80cc Stock Novi ce 12+ro und-up -26 riders were biding for th e win but only onewas fast enough to claim it - th at was Chris Pocin o.
