This St. Patrick's Day was a lucky da y for l25cc and 250cc Pro winners John Smith and T erry Kyle a t S.R.A.C. MX in Colo rado Sp ri ngs. In the first mot a . a first tu rn pile-up claimed eigh t rider s. which ga ve Bo- den Soderbeck th e lead; however . Kevin McKnight (Yam) was in close pursuit. as was Smit h. Heading int o th e second lap. hath Mr Kniglu a nd Smith blas ted hySexierheck and sta rted to mix it up for the lead.T he dogfigh t was closeand all th at McKnight cou ld gain on Smith was about four seconds, hUI Smith co u ld never get any closer than two seconds . While McKnight and Smi th were .a rgu ing over first.T im Buchl i started to hound Soderberk for third . T hose two fough t it OUI for awhi le. until Buchli found a flaw in Soderberk's defen se and shot on by. At th e check- ered flag , it was McKnight. Smit h, Buchli a nd Soderheck. In ro und two. Mike- Adcock held on to th e lead fo r a half a lap before getting passed hy Smith and Steve Kyle. Soon aft er. Smi th stre tched h is lead 10 an enormous advantage . whill' Kyle slipped away from a five-way war fo r third. McKnigh! inch ed hi s . way through th e battle field and int o third near th e end of th e race; how- ever. McKnighr's drive didn ' t end th ere - he se t hi s sights on Kyle and started 10 reel h im in . Just IwOturns from the while flag, Kyle and Mr - Knight entered a 1800 turn . where Mr Kniglu held the throu le wide open through the outside line and passed him . Smith look the win ahead of McKn ight and Kyle. In Ihe250cc Pro class,Jim Mitclu-l! took command of the first mota before gl,tti ng out of shape on the stairsreps and letting Boo St ichter and Terry Kyle by. Mitchell managed to regain one of those lost positions hy passing Kyle. Like th e previous moto, Mitchell jumped OUI 10 an ea rly lead hUI was passed three la ps lai n hy Kyle a nd Chri s Sundstrom. As th e ra ce pro- gressed. the top three r iders sta rted 10 pull away from the rest of the pack in a close bailie. Stich ter, meanwhi le. was back in 10th recovering from a poor . start. Soon after , Sunds trom crashed OUIofcon tention lett ing Kyle and Mitch ell duke-it-ou t for the top sial. But a t the end of th e race. it was Kyle st ill OUI in from . just ahead of Mitch ell and th e fin e rid e bv St ichter. Kyle's second moro win enabled him the overall . whi le Mitchell rook second.
