.... '" '" w Z U - ~ N > W -J U ; LOCKHART SCORCHED EARTH MOTO When You Hot-You Hot! By Paul Hanson Photo By Richard Creed LOCKHART, TEX., June 25, L972 When you hot-you hot! That meant the weather as well as the competition today at Southwest Motocross Park. The mercury soared to 102 degrees and stayed there most of the afternoon. The Expert division suffered such losses by the second moto, that the racing schedule was cut back from seven laps per moto to five, to insure some participan ts for the third moto, The attrition rate was acute as it sidelined at least half of the con testan ts by the second round of competition in the lesser classes as well. The trophies and cash acquired by the winners (survivors?) was more than deserved. The only people who reveled in the red·hot motocross was a pair of nomadic desert racers who turned up at the Lockhart circuit. The Brush Busters M.C. was represented by Dave Banks and Cary Oien of the Los Angeles area. They tried the Texas bike buster and found it to their liking. Many of the locals were somewhat unsettled by the Californian's terminology. "Bitchin", it seems, has nothing to do with female hounds. What the home-folks have been calling "rocks" was "gravel", and jumps were "bumps" to Dave and Gary. But the desert rats allowed as how the mota was fun anyway. (Fun?) It was hotter than the third level of Hades and Old Stitch himself was waving the checkered flag. The Open Experts was a good race. The flying Bigley Brothers did it right in the first mo to. They ran first and second and there was less than a bike length between them for the seven scorching laps. Richard L. Bigley was on his trusty lead sled 380 CZ, while younger brother Gary opted to borrow R.L.'s new 360 Yamaha. The mainstays of the Bigley Co. Racing Team got good starts and were 'way in fron t of the rest of the field. Apparently Gary hasn't learned all of his big brother's tricks since he n.ever saw anything except the back of Richard's helmet clear to the finish line. Brady Booth of Temple Tex. pulled himself out of the hole (bad start) into third place. The final results were the See the new MONARat Complete 1972 line-up on display at the VALLEY'S LARGEST, MOST EXPERIENCED RICKMAN DEALER KOLBECYCLESALES, INC. 22123 Ventura Blvd. Woodland Hills (213) 348-7891 CUSTOM Competition & Racing Leathers by 'Pet!l4II BlIY ctirect & save" 1 Week service 11171 Virginia Ave0J- Lynwood, Ca. 90262 (213) 032-7419 The LelttfefShop : Mike Patrick's : YWIfA of COlONA <) 1101 E. 6th St. - Corona nl4) 13~lln AMA YAMAHA/HODAKA HANDUNG KIT .. Bigley first, Gary second and Booth on his 400 Husky third. The newly initiated 250 In termediate class was dominated by J ames Little on a stock·looking DT-I Yamaha. He was well ahead of DT-2 rider Sam Planta of San Marcos Tcx. and CZ equipped Gary Oien of Hacienda Heigh ts, Cal. Both Planta and Oien have been into moto for a year or so and they go fast. In fact they are both nearly Expert-fast. The way Little stayed in front of the rest of the Intermediate 250's defied logic, gravity and oddsmaker's rule of thumb. If Little ever gets his hands on a real 'crosser he just might go real fast. One of the best races of the afternoon was th'e 100 Experts. Steve Foster of San Antonio rode his Hodaka to the winners circle, with hard charging Bruce Miller on his Honda following closely behind in all three motos. Tbese two kicked up a lot of dust trying to be top cat. Bruce ultimately claimed the runner·up position. Dave Banks of La Habra, Calif., on his universal tread, desert prepped Kawasaki followed in third place. George "Lizard" Larzelere and his Bultaco crew came up from Corpus Christi again this month and was primed to take home the top bucks in the 125 Experts, but it was not to be George's day. He had to settle for the second place loot. David Green (younger brother of 250 Expert Phil Green) of Bergstrom A.F.B. in Austin, Tex., ran away [rom everyone. It's been a long time comin' for the 16-year-old Suzuki rider. His several times around the demanding Lockhart circuit have netted him thirds, fourths, and fifths. This time he went all the way to the top with three first place runs. And that was over some of the best 125 competition around. Danny Weir, One of west Texas' hottest 125 riders, didn't get a peep of his Penton and spent the sweltering afternoon among the specs. DeWitt Knox, who did 'em all in at the last Lockhart meeting, was off the pipe this month. He scored a second place in the second moto, but was in fifth place the rest of the con test. He was edged ou t of third place by one point and Walter Gilchrist's Penton. FOR HODAKA·.ILlIY see your local HODAKA dealer Distributed by Tiger Distributing 653 W. Broadway, Glendale, Ca. 91204
