Texas World Speedway hosted a double road race special with bracket racing on Saturday and bowl bending on Sunday. It was a success . Mini madness in the Alamo City- Wedding sweeps three . By Dave Nielsen SAN ANTONIO, TEX., 1\1AY 29-30 Thirteen year-old Derek Wedding continued his dominati on of the younger .motocross set this week- end at round three of this year's National Minicycle Association series, held at San Antonio Cyclerama. Despite intense competition, dust, fatiguing heat, and a couple of untimely falls, the mighty mite from Marshall kept the twistgrips on his Pit Stop Racin g Yamahas locked WFO to carry off first place in all three over 12 Expert divisions, including 83cc Stock, 105 Modified, and 83 Modified. Next time you see him, ask him how to ride a moto with one hand holding the carburetor on. And still win the class. Also' taking a triple this week was Ben (Above )83cc Experts buzz off. (Below) Mark Loving and Johnny McGee dice it out. Theriot, who in convincing fashion again blew away the 9-11 year-old Experts with virtually no sweat, further padding his already insurmountable series points lead. The young Cajun will definitely be a threat at the NMA National Finals, and his sano machinery, including a YZ80 stocker and two much-modified Hondas, haven't missed a lick yet. Yamaha riders Shane Sitton and Mike Dickey marked well with seconds and thirds, while one of the quickest ten year-olds anywhere, Darin Eames of Mesquite, ran with the leaders o ff and on to take a third and a fourth in the two modified classes. A second in 12+ 83cc Stock Novice wouldn't mean much to most folks, but Mexicano Louis Cardova was able to follow and race in the complica ted NMA program without knowing a word of English, ending runner-up to class winner David McClain of Houston. In 12+ Intermediate rounds, Del Rio's Clay Cauthorn swooped seconds in 83 Stock and Mod to keep his points rolling in along with class winners .1ohn Pollard and Kyle Landrum. • Results in Results Section. Texas World Speedway: bracket ~ road racing By Ric Levit COLLEGE STATlON,TX., MAY 29-30 The W.E.R.A. very successfully hosted their third Texas World Speedway road race. The two day event drew the largest crowd of area road racers ever seen by WERA representative Steve Riley and CRRC President Lou Linden who wore ear to ear grins all da y as the barrages of road racers converged on the race track. Almost everyone agrees the T.W.S. track is one of the finest tracks available to the area racers. . On Saturday afternoon bracket racing was introduced to the area road racers and accepted enthusiastically. It not only proved to be an organized type of practice but it presented a lot of the riders with the task of riding on the same track with smaller or larger displacement bikes. Probably the most beautiful thing about the bracket racing was that each class involved quite a few riders instead of small five and six bike races the riders were riding against the clock which develops their skills and consistency. Brackets were a great warm up for the following day's racing. By Saturday evening the pits were full of some of the areas more no table riders machinery. The Byars brothers came out in and massive amounts of full force along with Jon Minanno and the Big 0 Triumphs. Jon suffered never ending problems and the Byars brothers crashed. Freddie Spencer brought out his new monoshock and Dennis Kalmus brought Storms Cycles six year old 750 Moto Guzzi Production racer out of retirement. A welcome sight. As the races got underway, hardly could feel the excitement when .1on Minanno, Joe Patton, Dennis Kalmus and 15 other riders pre-grided, In the first tum Jon Minanno blew a spark plug out of a cylinder and barely survived as 12 riders tried to make their way around the disabled bike. By the end of the race it was Patton first and Kalmus second. Kalmus wobbled to his second with a bent front rim which was like riding whoop-de-docs. As the 250 GP class got underway Freddie Spencer took a commanding first with Dane Stewart and Chris Christensen dueling for second. It ended with Dane taking second with Chris about te n feet behind for third. Open GP brought horsepower from allover Texas. Paul Stephenson on his 0&0 Enterprises Honda, Gregg Bauer on an A.J . Foyt sponsored Kawasaki and Jon Minanno on Jack Wilson's Big D Triumph. Everybody watched the start including Jon whose chain broke at the start. Stephenson and Bauer battled it out during the whole race. Bauer finished ahead of Stephenson by 25 yards. • anyone could believe their eyes as they came out of the pits and the races were happening without any delays.
