ENORTIERNDA1'ElJt: t ~ U.S. Suzuki, coming on strong. Elliott took second by the end of the lap, and Richter had a good lead. Richter's lead only lasted one more lap w hen his spokes all collapsed. Elliott also took the second moto, with a good lead over Brand, in second. Brian Jodry (Suz), after a fifth in the first round, had been dicing with Ogden for the third in this one, and won out only to have his engine seize. Collecting a share of the 250 purse were: Bob Elliott, Dennis Brand, Kevin Henry, Gary Ogden, Mike Hersman (Hus), Floyd Davis (Suz) , Steve Rhyan (Yam) and Darrell Schultz (Bul). Open Pros also ran qu alifiers. Rich ter and Magoo were th e stars of the show on their KTMs, both insistent on winning and both looking perfectly capable of doin g so. The battle went on and Richter came out on top both times, Magoa taking two seconds, and Val Tamietti (Mai) got the thirds. Jon Derh ammer had led for awhile in the first mo to but fini shed fourth, and had trouble in th e second moto dropping from third to 16th. • Results in Results Section. Memorial Day mud By Jan Newman SANDY, ORE.. MAY 3 1 When you take a drippy week and add a three day weekend of serious rain it's enough to "dis- The meaning of holeshot. Faria &MacMurry win at Cal-Expo By Greg Joyce SACRAMENTO, CAL., MAY 28 During the preceding week a new sur face had been laid on the track, and many dismayed riders felt it Ieft something to be desired. Tract ion proved to be inconsist ant in the comers and at tim es th e heat races resembled a game of "Rollerball". Rollin' Rich MacMurray somehow managed to get aro und everyone to win his heat and came back later to take first in th e Handicap Main. Maclvlurr ay , rid ing off th e fifty yard line, edged th rou gh tr affic to pass Terry Graham and Mike Rooney on the last lap. Rollin ' Rich capped off his night by beating Terry Graham and Marty Benck in th e Scratch Con solation. Not too shabby! A badly mashed exhaust pipe didn 't seem to hamper Mike Faria as he came off the pole to easily win the Scratch Main. Faria led from the get-go and Dennis Robinson took second away from Rooney. In Division II, Mike LupoId took the - win after one restart while Kirt Tardiff ran a close second. • CMC National at SOHVP By Sallee Hilton SACRAMENTO, CAL., MAY 30 & 31 On Sunday, all Novice and Inter- mediate riders rode two motos, then got a rest/repair break overnight and rode the third mota on Pro day, Monday. The course was about two miles long, and only suffered slightly when the water truck broke down, and a replacement had to be sent for. The 32 mighty Magoo (Danny Chandler), in the first 125 Pro ride, was first off the line and built up a lead by the end of the first lap with Dave Carlson, FMF rider from Anaheim, trying to catch him. Carl son was followed by Bruce McDougal (Hon), J im Hale (Hon), Danny LaPorte (Suz) and more, all so close it loo ked like a ten way figh t for second place ! Th is went on for five lap s, during which time Magoo got further away. McDougal's exhaust system was dangling, and Carlson and LaPorte traded positions several times. Midway in th e sixth lap, Magoo came around th e lap check station without a seat and holding the gas tank on with one hand. Either Magoo has lots of mechanics, or th ere were a lot of very foolish spec ta tors wanting to " help". There was such a " crowd around him he could hardly get back through it into th e race af te r his tank was strapped down .. . st ill witho ut a seat, and so far back that the best he could get out of th e finish was 19th . Carlson took the win, with LaPorte second and Mike Marquez (Hus), 16 years old, as is Magoo, taking third. ' " Robert Norton (Hon) who finished seventh deserves recognition for his attempt to reach th e front. Norton 's younger brother and he were sharing a bike, built from parts of each one's personal bikes, and it had blown the crank the day before. More parts were borrowed from friends, but the rebuilding was going too slow to make the first moto, A sympathetic Sue Wood, the only female rider of th e event, offered her Honda; Norton got to the line, but the pack was already a half a mile out on him. By the end of five laps he had passed 21 riders! The second moto for the 125 Pros belonged to LaPorte. Carlson took over second in the eighth lap and quit after the ninth for reasons unknown, putting McDougal second., Friedland was still in there for third. The $2400 purse went to eight riders running in each class, the 125 's cashing in were (in order) Dan ny LaPorte , Mike Marquez, Don Cantaloupi, Tim Lunde (Hon), Rober t Norton, Dave Carlson, Nick Rhine (Suz), and Jerry Brown (Yam). The 250's 'moto one got off after two qualifiers and a consolation. Mark Hilton (Suz) got the hole shot and did a half en do in the first tum leaving Pat Richter (KTM), Kevin Henry (Bul), and Dennis Brand (Suz) leading the pack with Bob Elliott, for I'm gonna (huff, puff ) pass that guy (pant) if it 's th e last thing I (wheeze) do. Open Junior Larry Crow (we think) at Mt. View.
