... _-.. - - Fantastic racing at Lodi Bowl By Ann Carr WDl, CAL., MAY 30 & 31 The Stock ton and Lodi Motor- cycle Clubs followed the Archie Clark Memorial Saturday night with two additional TT's on Sunday night and Monday of this Memorial Day weekend. Strong, gusty winds and cold weather for the weekend did not hamper a well-prepared course which provided tacky racing Sun day' night and a Lodi blue groove Sp~eciai Monday. Fred Merkel raced tw o classes, winning both Mini Open races handily. He also won the second 80 Main and led the first but lost a head gasket on th e white flag lap for some to ugh luck in an exciting race with Bill Arbogast. Bill managed to miss Fred for the win . Richard Thurman li terally blew away the Open J unior Minis both nights. Richard also makes extra money by cleaning up the remains of "adult" beer fights in the Lodi Clubhouse. Alex Jorgensen tested his IT machine and found it -worthy by winning both Open Expert events. Alex jumped out front quickly in the night event and was ~nofficially clocked at 22.30,a very fast time for a 40 incher at this track. Rick Raanes, Bob Masters, and Steve Hall picked up the points and bucks behind Alex Sunday. Masters doubled for a second Monday while Phil Vitalie picked up third when Steve Hall lost an engine on the white flag lap. Kim Jorgensen almost went three for three after winning Sunday 's race over fellow Can-Am riders Ken J ackson and Dennis Spence, but fell behind Steve Brandt at th at slippery Lodi tree on Monday. Young Spence's points over the weekend moved him into the number one spot (or close) as current leader Matt Carothers failed to show. The hard luck award this weekend goes to , novice Hal Hook who led the 250 Main Monday for two-thirds of the race (on a 175 Can-Am) but washed out in' .the pit turn, pulling muscles and ligaments in his knee. • cthe sign to buddy Dave Diller (62) _ -- • t t.O r- O"l ~ ~ C'J C'J II) s:: >-:l = 11II ~ If- The same team of rebuildable and tunable components which command the attention of professionals such as Gary Scott', Gary Nixon and Yvon DuHamel are available for you .
