Wichita Sprockets MX By Georgia Kirschbaun WICHITA, KANS. , MAY 3 1 The Wich ita Sprockets held a motocro ss race Memori al Day \~th a good turnout of out of town riders showing up . . Ponca City rider Marvin Casad took first in th e Beginners class. Dave Det te fini sh ed 3-1 to take first in the 125 J unior clas s. Barry Ilolem won by a big lead in both mot os in the 125 Senior class. Alan Girrends did a terrific job of riding by taking tw o first pl ace finishes in th e 250 Junior clas s after getting bad starts. In the 250 Senior class fir st mota Loy Burnett won by a big "margin , Wes Patterson was o ut afte r three laps with bike trouble. In th e second mota Patterson, Burnett, and Mark Shumate were riding wheel to wh eel for several laps when Patterson took off and finished with a big lead, but Burnett had first fo r the day with his 1-2 fin ish . J im Den ton from Ola th e had a 1-2 finish fo r first .overall in the Open Juniors. We" Patters on had his act together in the Open Sen ior class by finishing with a good lead in both motos . In the Over 35 class J ohn Bezinque finished 1-2 for second overall an d Bob Hartman 2-1 fo r fir st overall. The Minibike J unior class was won by Craig Becker with a 1-I fin ish and th e Minibike Beginners had Monty Ester fin ishing 1-1. • Glasenapp zaps Berthoud By Action OZ BERTHOUD, COLO.,J UNE 6 Narrow thinking got in the' way of an ordinarily. well run motocross track at. Berthoud. What was once a nearly perfect layout has been ' turned into a basically unsafe MX park. Hopefully after Sunday 's event the starting area will again be re-designed to make it much wider allowing riders a ch ance to safely set up for the first turn. The 250 Novice group had six riders go down rather hard, .two of them bad enough so as to not be able to ride again th at day. The thinking from other riders as' well as knowledgeable spectato rs had it summed up as the st arting area. Once this is changed the whole changes can be looked upon as improvements. By the time the Minis and Novice riders had thoroughly dusted up the track the Open A riders lined ' up for their first mota. What must have been going through their minds was "Hell, I'll either be firs t in to the tum or last. I just don't want to be in the pack." . As it was Poindexter and Glasenapp were into -th e turn first with Poindexter taking a brief. lead. Before the lap was over Gary Glasenapp (Bul) was out in front and Poindexter had to settle for second spot. Glasenapp coming off ten consecutive moto wins was 'inspired to make it at least eleven. That's the way ii ended, Glasenapp thoroughly dominating the class for the overall in Open A. There was an in teresting happening in the seco nd mota, however. Conditions through most of the day were very dry, hal fway through the mota the sky opened up and some of the largest drops of rain, this side of Oregon, were seen by the locals. From dust" to bite' within one mota provided the' cpm p e t ing ridcrs.. with their share of ch angeable expertise. I must say the area was quite attractive after the deluge. • Austin Motocross Park By Greg Labbe AUSTIN, T EX., MAY 30 " As the old saying goes, "While th e eat 's aMi)', the mice wiII play.' With most of Texas' to p notch riders ' gone off to con test the nat ionals during th is Spring ' and Summer, many of the local apprentice Exper ts are having a heyday. Suc h was the case at Austin Moto cross . Park this Sunday as some of those hard-charging yo ung roo kies were ab le to cash in on th eir mentors' ab sence and st ill provide thrilling Exper t ac tio n. . Of co urse, not all of th e top riders are gone. Roger Brown, probably th e fast est ris ing young st art in Texas, rode ' bo th th e Open and 250 classes, dominating the Open bu t failing to fin ish in the 25 0 class. Roger, on a 400 Yamaha, smoked 'em in both Open motes, with J e rry Symank from Dallas riding his fin est race ever on'a new 370 Suzook. Symank and Pat Adamson from Killeen had a tremendous handlebar-hanger going for ab out half of the fir st mota until J erry finally got by and moved away in seco nd. Eventually Dean Mizes from Corpus Christ i, also Suzuki mounted, claimed third overall with a second mota third place fini sh just ahead of Rob Morrison and Adamson. The most in tense racing of th e day occurred in the 250 Expert class. Roger Brown's Can-Am quit o n him in both moto s while he wa s leading, so his absence left an opportunity fo r three up-and-coming young riders to duel for first pl ace cash. And duel they did. Running wheel to wheel in' both rnotos, Aust in's Chuck Loftin (Yam) held off th e charges of San An tonians Doug Archer (Bul ) and David Stutts (Hus)' in the first mota, but in the second mota it was rev ersed. David Stutts, close to crashing several times, hung on to edge out Arche r and Loftin by mere inches at the fin ish, and that was how they fared overall. Probab ly the most incredible ride o f th e day was put in by Robbie Jones. Riding for thc first time ever as an Expert, J ones flogged a stock Elsinore to second overall 125 Expe rt against some good veteran competitio n. Dicky Turn bo from Killeen won easily in both rnotos , running away and hiding early each time. David Daniels from New Braunfels got two bad starts, fini sh 2-5 and fourth overall while Bobby Bullock took his Yamaha to a consistent 3-3 for third overall, Jack Beckham came back to win th e 100 Novice class by winning th e second mota and edging out Terry Curtisv-Kyle Powell crashed in both motos but was able to get' up and char ge to third overall. Rex Weed's only challenge in the 125 Novice "B" came from Ottis Lance but Lance crashed as usual and had to settle for second overall. Glen Herrera holeshot-both motos and went on to dominate the 125 Novice " A" class with David Leith second and Mike Tangeman third. The Open class was a re al zoo, as usual. Bill Davis from New Braunfels would have been in the thick of things except that he was having his worst day ever 01; a motorcycle. The usually consistent Mr. Davis crashed his brains out four times, once only 20 feet from th e start. We won't say how' someone crashes only 20 feet off the line, but nex t time you see Bill, ask him how in the devil he go t his helmet visor stuc k under his crossbar just as he dropped th e clutch a t the start of th e second mota.
