Marland Whaley continued to demonstrate his almost total mastery of the sandy soil to win the event with a final tally of 34 points. Whaley has been the controlling force in practically every trial, on the ATA schedule this year and surprised nobody with his smooth, deliberate riding style and impossibly low loop scores. What was a surprise to many trials enthusiasts was the performance of Yamaha teamster Joe Guglielmelli from Walla Walla, Washington. Joe stayed rigllt with Marland all through the morning sections and was only behind by five points at the beginning of the afternoon exhibition sectiona. Joe, in fact, set the lowest loop score of anybody with a total of eight on his second go around in the morning after setting a "poor" fD'St round score of 19. After seeing Joe ride last year in the Spanish round of the European Championship where the terrain and ground conditions were very much like the stuff out at Escape Country it came as no SUl")'lrise that he had the natural ability to handle just about anything .that came his way. Guglielmelli's final score for the morning and afternoon was a real fme" 38 which didn't give Marland too much room for error. Northern Californian Steve Darrow Rich Bledsoe does the tree stump ballet during the Masters' exhibition. California State Olamp Marland Whaley was top rider in the 73 Trial de Espana. got in with a total of 45 to take third place. Steve combines an amazing finesse type control over his machine while at the same time, and sometimes in the same section, he will show bursts of just plain animal strength to pull out a clean in what would have been disaster for anybody else. Mark can banzai his way through sections that have spit the best riders on their cans and come out on the other side and say something like "It wasn't that bad"'. Mark took bome the fourth place award this year with a total of 47. Finishing fifth was Martin Belair who just blew his first loop so bad that he almost put himself right out of the trial before it was barely underway. "Marteeen"' got himself together from then on though and was only one point behind Whaley for the rest of the trial. That first loop bum-out cost him any fmish higher than fifth and really brought home the concept of consistency. Martin's score of 10 in the exhibition sections was the lowest of any rider enteredo ' It was nice to fmd out this year that more and more motorcycle people are becoming Trials oriented. Last year the biggest cheers could be heard 1¥henever one of the riders managed to clean some gigantic log (a zero to negJigible part of trials riding) but this year they are more aware and you could see the look in their faces as one of the competitors attempted a difficult off camber bank. Everybody was leaning and gritting their teeth trying everything they could to pull the guy through the section cleanly. Just great. Sure, we (Americans) still take more stock in the sensational as opposed to the solid nonflashy performances, but we are coming around and it's just in time. Next month the best riders in the world are going to be motoring around Saddleback Park. Then you won't see any flashy get-it-on performances, just real solid get-it-done riding.
