San Jose Indoor By Bill Spencer SAN JOSE, CAL., DEC. 1 Chuck Miller tagged two birds with one \Yin in tonight's fifth running of the 6-race indoor short track series. Miller, running second in the high point standings of the 250 Experts, won his second main even easily and with the win, put himself back on the White Plate short track list. The crashing scene was heavy as usual with the 360 Expert main requiring four restarts to make a program. Jerry Kole came out the victor with Dennis R.obinson taking the second and' his fifth trophy of five tries. He is a cinch win for the high point in that class and will be an outstanding pick for the indoor championship series to be completed at the Cow Palace in early March. With only one more race at this arena, the last night will decide the local champs, then it's on to Santa Rosa for an eight race series which will then culminate with the run-offs at the Cow Palace, a first for sportsmen riders. Young Steve Kapigian took home his first first place trophy of a short career and with Louie Aruta doing the fine tuning, on his 350 Honda, It won't be the last for this pudgy little kid. Taking second was the littlest of the Phillips kids, Dave, younger brother to Bill and Tom. Geoff Lowe hasn't been satisfied with just leading the 250 Junior class and went out to win the 125 Juniors tonight. He won't have too much of a chance to double his high point efforts, but with a third in tonight's 250 run, he still takes home some ex tra hrass. Blue Mountain 100 Mile Hare Scrambles . By Jan Newman HERMISTON, ORE., NOV. 25 The Blue Mountain Motorcycle Club had a helping hand from the great waLer truck in the sky during the wee hou-rs Sunday morning. Wind gusts strong enough to blow out our faithful furnace rocked us back to a chilly sleep in our home on wheels. By morning, the rain was gone Ieaving the desert floor perfectly prepared for the race. Even the clutch-frying sand hills firmed up to pretty decent traction. When the race started at II :20 there wasn't a particle of dust to be found. Harriman led the first 25 mile lap on his 250 Yamaha with Allison (Hon) second in a string of riders within a minute time period. It took Harriman just 38 minutes to Imish the lap. At the end of the second lap, Allison had trimmed a minute off the lap time and one rider as he took the lead. Harriman had dropped to second and rumor spread through the pits that he'd dumped it. These two retained their positions throughout the remainder of the race. The 15 and Under and "Jack Benny" classes packed it up after 50 miles. Newton 0l1..-a 125 Husky was the front runner for the kids. The first Old Timer through was Davidson on a 175 Yamaha. He was holding his own beautifully on an overall basis when he came in 31st out of 238 riders at the halfway mark. The race was just going good when the Ilrst accident was reported to the pits. Terry Seal put his Maico into a flying fit and in the process he and the bike both suffered serious damage - mostly from pursuing riders. The Maico was still flopping when Orv Olson (Hus) pierced the tank in mid-air. From all reports, he was just one of many who made contact. At the first report of an injured rider, several guys went out to render aid but returned when they were unable to locate him. Meanwhile, more reports were coming in to the pits of an injured rider in bad shape. Rescue efforts were being initiated when a rider came in for his check and said the downed rider was his son and he was OK. With that he rode on to continue the race. An ambulance from Umatilla Army Depot was called and medics reported later he wasn't as badly injured as many feared. Many thanks for their aid. Allison earned the overall trophy and Herriman came in first 250 as they led a dozen or so 250s across the line. Ackerblade was aboard the Ill'St Open Yamaha. Top honors also went' to Whitten (100 Hod); Snyder (125 Hon) and Dillon (175 Pen). Steve Hovely probably worked harder than anyone else for his trophy. He pushed his bike for roughly 'I4-mile to finish 12th 125. BMMC is holding another 1QO miler on December 16th to raise funds for a MX course near Hermiston. 100 miles seems even further when you have to keep picking yourself off the ground. ,C 1:1 YAMAHA Expansion Chambers, All Years Cl ~ 74 Tuned Crossover Replacement Pipes ~ c FOUR STROKE EQUIPMENT 1:1 ~ Trident & 8SA 3 into I Systems Track or Street Models Available NOTE: - BOB 8AILEY'S PRODUCTS Are No Longer Manufactured by BLS ~ 1:1 15223 S.
